I like that they made it easy for them to stay and my guess is that is due to Covid.
J-Term is canceled this year, so students arenāt coming back until early February. When they arrive on campus, they will be going through a similar quarantine and testing schedule like they did for the fall semester. Classes start February 17th. Thereās lots of good information on the Covid info page: https://www.williams.edu/coronavirus/
Also, if youāre on Facebook, you can request to join the Williams College Families group. Itās administered by the director of family programs at the college. He posts updates about campus life and is very responsive to questions.
@purplemama unlike certain other purple colleges that shall remain unnamed, Williams has a Facebook group for families.
I was wondering if was it too early to join the group. Amherst used to have a great families group, very active but then suddenly it was deactivated for some reason
My friend has a D at Amherst. Sheās very frustrated that thereās no parent group. I havenāt noticed many (if any) new members of the Williams group. Itās pretty low key, hardly a hotbed of activity, unlike other parent groups that I joined when my D was trying to decide where to go to school.
There is a Group Chat that gets started by the ED cohort.
We are trying to get the Amherst one going again. Just search Amherst college parents.
The Amherst group that the college supported was recently killed off, but we are starting a new one. Have her search facebook for Amherst College parents. Iām hoping once this yearās class has parents like her looking for something it can get up to a critical mass. Right now itās too small, but hasnāt really been around long enough. Tell her to be part of the solution!
Thanks, Iāll let her know. Her D is a first-year and had a very good first semester even with all of the restrictions.
Actually, all schools release athlete data. It has to be filed with the Federal government. Off the top of my head, I believe Williams undergrad is roughly 40% athletes.
Here is the site to research athletes per team/school. Note though that not all athletes are recruited, or received support in the admissions process. https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/
Thanks @Mwfan1921, great resource, for Williams, they list about 740 athletes, so that is less than roughly 40%, the total students is list at 2,043, but I think the actual number is closer to 2,100.
Just anecdotal, but Iām also guessing this situation is pretty common. When we visited Williams, they had a wrestler who was recruited to play football. He played football, but had some wrestling experience so the wrestling coach got him to wrestle too. I donāt know the percentages, but there are definitely 2 sport athletes in D3.
My daughter is over the moon after being admitted to the class of 2025! We didnāt look much into the details of first-year life while awaiting the decision, but I see now that Mission Park is serving as first-year housing. Does anyone have the inside scoop on the MP experience versus the classic Quad experience as a frosh?
Congratulations! We are loving the excitement that the emails from Williams add
Welcome to Williams! I recommend joining the Williams Families FB group. I did a quick search and found a thread from last summer asking the same question. My takeaway, everyone thought where they lived was the best place: MP dwellers loved having a dining hall in your dorm, mostly singles, views of the mountains; Frosh Quad residents loved the central location, traditional college feel, and more recently remodeled than MP. My D is 2025 (taking a gap year) so I donāt have firsthand info.
Between MP and the Quad, both are great but different. Quad is more old school and has hardwood floors and wrought iron railings. The vibe is very New England with frisbee on the green, etc. Mission Park feels like a ski resort complex with a large dining hall and lounges and mountain views from large glass windows. Entries in MP are also linear and connected to a lounge for each entry, this makes it easier to hang out.
Thanks for the insights, TennisParent, and for doing some research on my behalf, gotham_mom. Iāll definitely check out the FB group. Between the Quad and MP (and Lehman), seems like a much improved set-up compared to having first-years scattered all the way to the Berkshire Quad.
Certainly, there is an interesting video essay on the COVID campus semester posted on Google docs.
Some #ās, looks like Williams ticked down yoy from 37 to 33%. Lot of variables this yr (gap years of athletes etc).
235 accepted from 715 applicants.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Where did you get those numbers?
