Winter 2012 Transfer Thread

Just a follow up in case anyone reading was in a similar situation, I called admissions this morning and they said everything was recieved and being processed. My links aren’t up because it was recieved close to the deadline.

@ MAG–You should definetely push for in-state status. Don’t know your details but I just completed the Residency Review form because my status was listed as oos even though I have maintained residency since I was born.

In the guidelines section B, paragraph 3a, it says

*a. Absence for Active Duty Military Service (U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Officers in the Public Health Service), Non-Administrative Missionary Work, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, or Similar Philanthropic Work

If you are domiciled in Michigan at the time of entry into active military duty, missionary work, Peace Corps, or similar service, you are presumed to retain your eligibility for resident classification as long as you are on continuous active duty or in continuous service and continuously claim Michigan as the state of legal residence for income tax purposes. If you are a dependent child of such an individual, you are presumed to be eligible for resident classification provided: (1) you are coming to the University of Michigan directly from high school or have been continuously enrolled in college since graduating from high school, and (2) you have not claimed residency for tuition purposes elsewhere.*

It’s kind of a pain in the butt but it helps your chances for admission; your wallet once you get in.

Accepted today! Go blue baby

Seriously?! Congratulations!! When did you get the confirm? I can’t wait to find out!

congrats man, you were one of the waitlistees last time…glad to you made it :)

What? Congrats dude! Good to know decisions are being released, can’t wait till I get mine. Makes me even more anxious, I am really struggling to wait any longer now.

I just checked WA today and it was there. Says I’ll get something in the mail shortly. Where do you all attend now? I’m at CMU

I’m not attending anywhere right now because I have no more pre-reqs that will transfer. Prior to joining the Army and taking a couple courses every semester, I was attending Eastern Michigan.

I’ve been checking WA everyday now and no changes. Although I’m a Fall transfer, I’m working as much as possible with admissions to get an early response since I’m getting out of the Army prior to April so I kinda need to know where I’m going to be living lol. Definitely savor the moment, I can only imagine how you felt when you found out. I seriously can’t wait!

I’m at Pitt right now and MechiganBoy, you mind sharing your stats? It not only helps us but also helps future transfers that may find this thread.

Ya. HS GPA 3.2 ACT:26 rank was like 100/300. Pretty terrible I know. My CMU GPA is 3.58. And I’m OOS.

How can you got into CMU the first place. A lot of EC?

CMU as in Central Michigan, not Carnegie Mellon.

So I called on residency status today to see how long it would take to correct my residency and if it would have an effect on admission, and was told by three different people (I had to verify after all), that for a winter transfer, residency has no effect on admission.

I really hope that’s true since the Residency Status Office said reviewing “applications” could take up to 8-10 weeks!

How ironic that serving in the military means I have to apply for residency status in my home state, the state in which I have been a legal resident since I was born.

abrknight- Michigan is just awful regarding in state residency. I’m going to school out of state right now and they determine me to be out of state. I’ve lived for the past 15 years in Michigan and my home address is still a Michigan address. I’m really not surprised that they determine you to be OOS. It’s almost like they’re trying to make as many people OOS as possible and look for any excuse to give you that status. Then they find a way to make people who are clearly IS have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to regain that status. It’s total BS.

@ Mech, how long did it take you to receive a decision from the time you submitted your application?

I agree that Michigan has some crazy procedures and policies when it comes to determining residency. I’ve met people when I lived in AA who should NOT have received in-state, and others such as abrknight and myself who have to struggle to get it. At least Michigan participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program in conjunction with the GI Bill, so regardless the residency classification we’ll be able to afford it.

@ abrknight - that’s weird that they said 8-10 weeks for a decision turn-around time for winter admissions… wonder why that is? I was told the average was 4-6 weeks, but if it works out like last year then that wait time may be exponentially longer. I would like to assume Michigan would avoid making the same mistake this year, but we’ll just have to see…

I submitted my App and sent my transcripts on August 24th or so. Oh and I didn’t specify, but it’s for LSA.

@mechiganboy,

First off, CONGRATS! Thats great man. Do you know of any reason why you got your decision so quickly? Did you request it or ? I only ask because I know, for MAG at least, that there are a TON of people that applied early August and are still waiting.

Actually, does anyone know how UMICH sorts their applicants for review?

From my understanding, Michigan sorts their applicants on a first come first serve basis in terms of a fully completed application. If Mechiganboy got his application completed and confirmed on 8/24 he would be one of the first people who were able to have it evaluated. @Joshuadrc, you and I both had our applications completed in mid-September so it’s no surprise that we are going to get our decisions later than Mechiganboy. MAG is different because he is applying for Fall 2012 as opposed to Winter 2012 so he’s in a different pool compared to us Winter transfers. So in terms of Fall applicants, he will be one of the first to get a decision but they will probably be looked at later than for Winter applicants because there is a very limited window in which they can be evaluated as opposed to Fall transfers who theoretically have until April to be evaluated. Basically, it’s first come first serve within your pool.

Official Decision: Denied.

You guys know my stats. I’m Appealing. Any suggestions?

anthony is exactly correct in his description of the university’s procedures. Even though I had my app submitted on Aug 6, Michigan didn’t even start processing until Sep 1 (that’s what it even says on my app submission date in WA). Once all of the winter transfers receive a decision and commit then they can start to looking at Fall applicants. He’s also right in saying that they don’t have to give Fall transfers any decision until April (or June as some found this last year…)
