Can someone let me know when something actually interesting will be taking place? Right now every time I tune in, I’m getting commentary or curling.
I’m watching all the stuff that happened while I was sleeping on replay- mostly women’s hockey and… curling. The earliest things will happen live is 8:05pm Eastern. Most things won’t get going until after 10pm.
I spent a year in Toronto and watched a bit of curling that year. Thought it was a bit funny at first but then got drawn into it.
We got to go to the Salt Lake Winter Olympics and our hotel was near the curling venue. I had never watched it before, but was really fun to see in person. I still like watching it. Not as much as the snowboarding, skating, speed skating and other stuff, but still enjoyable.
The women’s moguls quals last night was pretty amazing.
My kid’s main coach at their facility (the head of a coaching group all the athletes use) is there with teammates who are competing. So obviously, our family will cheer them on (although they compete for a rival country!).
The team figure skating event is impacted by positive test results and skaters not being able to participate. Canada’s Keegan Messing (who originally skated for the U.S., his mom is Canadian) is still trying to make it to the Olympics and it’s a big drama right now.
Nathan Chen skated well; we’re rooting for Shoma Uno, among many other skaters.
We’ve been watching a lot of curling (a sport it seems you either love or not). The Italians in mixed doubles are on fire.
Can’t wait for hockey, sad that not all players could participate but understand why.
That being said, many people are choosing to avoid watching these Olympics, for many reasons.
Is your kiddo a skater? My my D was a lot younger she skated at a rink that had a few Olympians that trained there which made the Olympics really exciting to watch since we knew the skaters personally.
Very odd music choices during the opening ceremony, I thought.
@MaineLonghorn seems like music in public domain.
Many are not watching due to genocide and human rights abuse and communist reign
Interesting! I hadn’t thought of that.
I think it is classical music with a twist. A little faster (to get them walking faster?), maybe more electronic?
How nice, @PrdMomto1! How long ago was this?
My kid has “chased ice” at enough rinks in the country that we have had the opportunity to share practice ice with American, Australian, Canadian, German, Korean, Lithuanian, Phillipino (!) and Russian world/Olympic athletes, among other nations (can’t keep track). The real honor is the training we’ve had at times - coaches of World/Olympic medalists/winners - some of whom have won gold themselves. All very down-to-earth and disciplined (work hard/play hard types).
It is very exciting to see skaters perform the programs they’ve been actively developing on the ice since the summer. Also interesting to see the difference in speed live versus on camera. Whether my kid ever makes it to regular senior level international competition remains to be seen. But her training facility has been a real positive and stabilizing presence over the past half-year, and probably the best place to be mental health-wise.
Afterwards, my kid wants to do curling! We went to one of those “try out curling” events, but the rock was too heavy for a 55 lb nine year-old to successfully handle.
I seem to always catch snowboarding when it’s on, too.
Watching women’s slope style snowboarding while drinking wine and eating pizza in our hotel room at Mammoth. We missed seeing the slope style Olympic qualifying 1 month ago here at Mammoth when we had to cancel our trip here because I got Omicron’d. Can’t wait to hot the slopes tomorrow.
That Olympic torch is weak. Looks like a candle inside something designed by Chip and Joanna Gaines.
It was in 2010. My D was in maybe 2-3 grade and we lived in Florida. The closest rink was pretty small but was an Olympic Training site, mainly for pairs skaters. Both of the pairs teams in the Olympics that year came from the rink. We knew them well and they all worked and coached at the rink. One skater was my daughter’s coach at the time. There were also a lot of skaters from other countries who would come to Florida for a few months of the year to train. I agree that skating is different in person. It’s really hard to understand the speed and power, height of the pairs lifts, etc. from watching on TV.
We moved to another state after that and my daughter discovered synchro and found she enjoyed the team aspect of synchro more than individual skating. She continued to test and take lessons but eventually stopped competing in singles when she got on higher level synchro teams and just didn’t have time for both. So she chased her dream of competing for Team USA through synchro instead.
Good luck to your child! I always wanted mine to try speed skating. We have a long track here and I always thought she’d be good at it. But it never happened. Now she skates just occasionally for fun. When she went to college she chose the one school on her list without an easily accessible rink.
How lucky to live near a rink with such high-level skaters, at least for a short while. (A lot of talented athletes never fully pursue their sport due to not being near a facility appropriate to their interest.) Synchro is great for team-oriented skaters, and a great way to have more participants in the sport. Love speed skating, too!
My first thought about the music was that they had chosen the soundtrack from Fantasia…well, at least until they threw in Pomp and Circumstances.
Pomp and Circumstance made us laugh. Are they graduating to the Olympics?
True, but in 2018 it was in Pyeongchang, a very remote part of South Korea.
