BIS2A is the intro to biology taught by either John Roth or Facciotti. PLS2 is Plant Sciences Botany and Physiology of Cultivated Plants taught by Saltveit.

I am a pre-Landscape Architecture Major, science is NOT my thing. I have to take one of these classes in order to fulfill my Biological Sciences requirement. Which would be the easiest?

I went onto Rate My Professor and all the review for BIS2A were quite poor, regarding the teacher and the class. However, the PLS2 reviews were all quite positive. Should I go with PLS2 based off Rate My Professor?

BIS 2A covers basic cell biology…so if you’re not good at that, I recommend taking PLS2. I was lucky that I didn’t have to take BIS 2A because I took the equivalent of it at community college, and two people from a club I joined told me I was lucky that I didn’t take BIS 2A at UCD because it was apparently hard.

Lawl, yeah Bis 2A is hard at UCD compared to nearly any community college course. Relatively speaking though, its VERY easy here. However, Bis 2A typically has more emphasis on homework/quizzes than the midterms/final.

Source: I took it last year and breezed through

So I am starting the chem series next quarter, and I was also considering starting the bio series. I’m wondering why it’s suggested we wait until we finish chemistry before we take bio. Should I really wait to take Bis 2A until my sophomore year? I was hoping to finish it as soon as possible, but if I really need to know chem to do well in bio, I’ll wait. By the way, I took chem in high school but remember almost nothing; I barely passed out of workload chem.

I dont think it is recommend that you finish chem before starting bio, last year it was rec that you start chem before starting bio, and they actually have a good point with this.

Bio 2A deals a lot with cellular structure and metabolism, which is fueled completely by redox reactions, which you learn in chem 2a. There’s also stuff in bio 2a about the phospholipid bilayer membrane and other molecular interactions that having a basic knowledge of chem helps.

However, more than maybe 2 questions on a midterm and one on a quiz tops, nothing from chem ever helped me in bio 2a. And I didn’t remember anything from hs chem either and barely passed out of workload.

I suggest just take it now if you want a head start, otherwise just wait to take it in spring quarter. Lots of people do both with no problem getting behind either way.
