Winter Semester.

Alright so I was just recently denied from the University of Michigan. Not too happy but I have already started my Winter transfer application. I am completely at a loss as to why I was denied but I'm over it. Could anyone offer advice on anything that would help? Literally anything, here are some of my stats.

Senior Class President
NHS President
3.91 GPA unweighted
30 ACT
5 on AP Biology, 4 on AP Calculus... (Also took AP Chem and English)
Academic All-State Football
Football, Baseball
Model UN, Link Crew, Student Council
Graduated with over 40 college credits from local community college.

.....Did I mention I am also a white male? :'(... Not sure if that is rectifiable though lol

dam dude, I don’t know how u didn’t get in, I guess just do really well at the college you are goingn to now

Hey I strongly would recommend doing the year out at the college you’re at; I’m 100% serious, a lot of people don’t get in after 1 semester or even 1 year.

andydai92- Yeah bro I know, and you bet I will!

zinthafan- I understand your recommendation but I should also mention I have been in regular contact with a UM admissions councilor and she strongly suggested I re-apply for the Winter Semester…

Oh and what would your guys opinion be on writing my next free style essay on affirmative action? Too cheeky? It’s definitely something I can be passionate about…

Holy Cow that would be the worst idea ever, imo

lol it was mild sarcasm…

First off, are you in-state or out-of-state?

If you’re in-state you should have gotten in, if you’re out-of-state you probably should have gotten in, but no guarantees.

Anyways, the rest of my answer is based on the fact that you’re in-state.

Last year (and apparently this year too) the admissions staff actually denied students who were “over-qualified” that they thought wouldn’t accept their admissions offer. Crazy, I know, but it was an effort to improve that all-elusive USNWR ranking. It’s probably too late for the fall, but you should still try this following procedure:

Try to get a meeting with some admissions officer (this is the hardest part)

Travel to Ann Arbor (hopefully with your parents) for the meeting with a check for a large percentage of your tuition (maybe ~$1000-$1500)

Tell the admissions staff you’ll give them the check on the spot if they accept you.

If that doesn’t work I would try to transfer during the winter (make sure you ace your community college classes) and write a good essay.

Side note: This literally happened to my brother a year ago (although his test scores were a little higher) and some of his other friends. We’re Ann Arbor residents though and all 4 of my parents/stepparents worked at Michigan at some point, so we had a lot of connections. All of my brothers and his friends who were “wrongfully” denied admissions got in.

Hope you get in. I just graduated there with an engineering degree myself.

@Brimaki

That is such an interesting concept! Although I think I am far from over-qualified I also have no ideas of my own… So I like yours :)… But in all seriousness I just submitted my app for the winter, do you think it would help to visit the admissions office?
