Wireless internet in freshman dorms

do freshman dorms have wireless interent? i know the lounges and common areas have wifi, but do people’s actual rooms get wifi?

yes, nearly every dorm has full wifi access. BUT, like all colleges with cinder-block walls, your ethernet connection will often be more reliable and faster (wifi speed is only as fast as it slowest link, and most folks aren’t on N yet).

none of the freshman dorm rooms actually have wireless access, or at least they didn’t last year. some people bring wireless routers even though we’re not supposed to have them and you can get their signal if you’re lucky. just make sure you get a long Ethernet cable and then you should be able to use your computer anywhere in your room. but like you said, all lounges and common areas do have wireless and the hallways do too although it’s not always reliable.

Unless you already have a spare ethernet cable, I would just go to the bookstore and buy one there. It’s significantly cheaper than big box retailers. You better be quick, because the bookstore does run out early in the semester.

there’s an ethernet port in every dorm room?

Yes, ethernet ports in every room.

oh thats great so i’ll always have interent access no matter what

As ready2go mentioned, get a long ethernet cord (30 or 50 ft). My D tried to tape a shorter cord to the ceiling to cross the room to her desk. After re-taping the cord umpteen times (it looked like a clothesline!), she finally gave in and bought a long cord. She then ran the cord around the perimeter of the room behind the furniture.

i already have like a 25 ft ethernet cord, but i just realized this is still no good because i need my mac’s ethernet port for my xbox lol . why cant BC just have wifi every where they cant expect us to go w/o xbox live right?

re: ethernet length…IMO, it really depends on the setup of your room. My D’s room was setup exactly like the link below, with their desks immediately under the port. Thus, a 30’ cable would be have been overkill. If I recall, one used a 10’ foot cable and one used a 6’.

Note the std double: 12’ x 16’.

I agree. My D’s furniture was initially set up this way and the shorter cord she first brought worked, but they moved the furniture around after they settled in, so both desks and dressers were set up under the stationary wall shelves. Her desk ended up being on the opposite corner from her ethernet port. The longer cord just provides some flexibility.
