Wisconsin-Madison vs. Delaware (honors)

Hi,
I am having trouble choosing between these two schools. I really like both of them. I was accepted to both of them. Both of them cost about the same as an out of state student. I'm from Chicago, IL. What's your opinion?

Thanks

I’d go to the University Of Delaware if you’re in the honors program and they cost the same. Wisconsin has a bad rep as a party school and Delaware is a good school.

Nonsense. Wisconsin is the superior school. If costs are similar, than this is a pretty easy decision.

In contrary rjkofnovi, I think that Delaware and Wisconsin are very similar schools academically, if you’re in the honors program at Delaware and the costs are similar, I’d go to Delaware

Pierre, can you give us evidence to support your statement? Delaware is a good university no doubt. It is also a fun university that affords its students 4 fun and satisfying years. But I have never heard of Delaware mentioned in the same league as Wisconsin.

PS: Please note that I do believe that Delware has pretty cool football helmets…certainly far nicer than Wisconsin’s! ;)

well I know that you can probably go to US News and point out that Wisconsin is 20 or so spots above Delaware but to me 20-30 spots doesn’t make a huge difference.
I think that in this case the honors program at Delaware and the opportunities that it can provide puts Delaware in the same league as Wisconsin without honors and would be my choice in this situation

UDel has somewhat of a party rep, too. Hard to find a flagship that doesn’t. Pick the school where you feel the most comfortable, or the most affordable one.

LOL at Alexandre. I’ve seen those helmets. They are blue with a wing type design in a color similiar to yellow. Reminds of another school. Hmmmm, which one could it be?

There is actually a 36 spot difference according to the USNWR. I am not a great believer in the USNWR mind you and I agree that a 30 spot difference in the rankings isn’t very significant, not when you consider that there are thousands of universities. But in terms of pure academics, Wisconsin is definitely stronger than Delaware. I cannot think of a single department at Wisconsin that is not ranked among the top 20 or 25 in the nation. Similarly, I cannot think of a single department at Delaware (with the exception of Chemical Engineering) that is ranked in the top 50.

Fiske gives Wisconsin a ***1/2 academic rating and Delaware a academic rating.

Wisconsin has top 15 undergraduate Business and Engineering programs. Delaware is not ranked in the top 50 in either.

Wisconsin’s peer assessement score is 4.1/5.0 (comparable to Emory, Georgetown, UCLA, UNC, UT-Austin, Vanderbilt, WUSTL), Delaware’s peer assessment score is 3.0/5.0 (comparable to Clemson, Fordham and Tennessee).

Finally, Madison is one of the nicest and funnest college towns in the US. Newark, Delaware is also nice, but not nearly as nice as Madison.

Overall, for the same price, I would definitely recommend Wisconsin.

University of Wisconsin- Madison

Wisconsin is one of the most consistently underrated schools. Trust me, it has a big reputation in academia at the very least.

Delaware is nowhere near the same class of university that Wisconsin is-that is ludicrous. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a WORLD CLASS education at one of most underrated schools in the nation-Wisconsin. Frankly, I don’t think UCLA, Michigan, UNC, Berkeley or Virginia have much (if anything) on Madison.

^^^^Berkeley and Michigan do have an overall edge on Wisconsin.

Wisconsin-Madison is the FAR better school.

Definetly go to Madison. It’s a great school with a great campus. I will go there in two years if I can’t get into BC or Michigan with good financial aid.

I would choose Delaware because they really do have a great honors program.

Wisconsin has a good honors program, too. If you didn’t get in initially, you can get in later.

as great as Wisconsin is, Delaware also has a great reputation and I don’t think you can go wrong at either school. Delaware also has a great study abroad program too. I’m gonna stick to my vote for Delaware

UW Madison is definitely the much better overall school. Delaware’s only really strong program is chemical engineering, which Madison is just as strong at. Got to UW.

I don’t think there is a question that UW Madison is a better school but that doesn’t mean it is a better fit for you. What kind of things are important to you? What field do you hope to study in? How close do you want to remain to your family? What culture are you hoping for in college?

These things are important in deciding between two schools. All the best in whatever you decide.
