I had all four of mine out last year because two of them were impacted and I just didn’t have room for them in my mouth. Getting them out was not that big of a deal – I was under anesthesia for the procedure and didn’t feel a thing. I have very little memory of the actual procedure, except insisting to my mom that I could drive home – SO glad she didn’t buy into that one, haha!

They prescribed some vicodin for me but I only used it once when I randomly had a horrible sharp pain in my mouth – so bad I was screaming. But that only happened one night. Other than that, the recovery was just annoying, not painful. Not being able to eat real food was the worst part. I basically subsisted on milkshakes and applesauce for a week because I had such limited mobility in my jaw.

I had mine out in February. Not fun. Use your painkillers preemptively. It avoids the delay when you really need them. For the first few days, keep the holes filled with cotton. Ice it as much as possible. That’s really all that I did. In a few of days you shouldn’t be hurting that much. Good luck, don’t get dry socket.

It was a pretty up and down experience for me. I know it’s different for everyone, but I’m glad it’s over with.

I’ll agree with you on one thing - going to sleep was kind of awesome. I remember having awesome, drug-induced dreams and being disappointed when I woke up. I was also pretty funny when I was still drugged up (Doctor: “Let me get you some drugs to help the pain later.” Me: “Drugs are bad! Druga are bad!” ***?). Also, I apparently told my dad that now that I’m in college, I hate beer, but I take shots, except that flaming shots are scary. Great.

However, once the pain meds wore off, I had a really hard time. I had a pretty bad reaction to the percocet that they gave me and literally threw up four times within the 24 hours after I got them out. If you take strong painkillers, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take them on an empty stomach!! I’m pretty sure that’s the reason I was so sick, and it was awful.

I was swollen and in a decent amount of pain for a few days (since I effectively couldn’t really take painkillers), but it eventually got better. Amazingly, I didn’t get dry socket, so all ended well.

i had mine out about a year ago, and it was awful! it took so long for me to get back to eating solid food. i remember a few days after i was eating these really soft pancakes and it hurt so bad that i couldn’t finish. but it’s not really a long-lasting type of pain and it’s something that has to be done or you’ll be in an even worse place so don’t worry about it.
