I have always had problems evaluating myself in terms my statistics.
The october SAT score just came out and I checked, I got a 1970 on it.
My school is a very competitive school I'm pretty sure tons and tons of people got higher than me, which makes me pretty depressed.
But a lot of people told me that I'm just too used to be in the community that I have much higher standards than others.
Someone told me if you look at the national average, which is like 1560ish? or 1650ish I dont remember but the point is I'm above it by about 300.
So, basically what I want to ask is, is this a good score or bad score?
Does it depend on my standard or how should I view it?
Additionally, I saw some statistics of things like the SAT score range of US universities or like the average SAT score of them and such.
So some of the schools I really wanna go to are NYU, BU, University of Washington, Berkeley, and UCLA.
For them all, my score is all within the range or above or pretty close to the average.
I know this is a stupid question to ask since obviously they look at other things as well,
does the stats mean I have a shot with these schools?
I never thought of the fact that because I'm surrounded by a bunch of overachievers my standards might be higher than others.
I know the ultimate standard would be the higher the better. But this is my last time score on the SAT and my highest. How should I view it?
Thanks in advance!

If you’re in the 25%ile-75%ile, everywhere, I think it means you have a chance.

Many schools have miniscule acceptance percentages so that quite a few qualified students such as yourself cannot be admitted. However, if your scores are in the range, you should certainly apply.

I think I read somewhere SAT is designed so that 500 is the average score on each section. Each 100 points is supposed to be 1 standard deviation. Definitionally about 16% of the population will be more than 1 standard deviation from the mean and a a little more than 2% will be more than 2 standard deviations from the mean.

The SAT does tend to bounce around a bit from test to test, and from time to time needs to be recalibrated, so it’s possible that the mean is somewhat higher than 1500 currently.

Anyway, this is probably more information than you needed, but it’s an answer.

thanks for your response! My goal this time was actually a 2000+ so yeah. I will try my best on my apps!
