Student615 and mini, Thank You.! Exactly what I was looking for.

Student615, did you mean "a Smith student who spent a semester at Smith or vice versa?

mini,I am VERY interested in what you are saying. You use Italian in your example-are you suggesting pick ANY are of interest and compare? Would biology or other sciences be considered "mainstream"? I know they SAY it's among the most popular at Scripps, but someone at the weekend at Scripps shed some doubt. Okay, I'll save that for a Scripps thread.

As of right now I'm thinking my daughter would be more concerned about being able to participate in theatre without being a theatre major, opportunities in choir, and activites the equivalent of church "youth groups". Any comparisons there?

D was very interested in Scrips and was invited to the Scripps version of WOD.

The major differences

Scripps is BEAUTIFUL (dorms w/ balconies!)

Scripps has more the feel of women's dorm than a women's college
(this is a plus for students who want males nearby)

Smith curriculum offers more in terms of breath and depth

As much as I would have loved for D to attend Scripps (to live in a diff part of the country), academically, I think Smith is a much better fit. Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, D probab wouldn't have seriously considered Smith but for BF of 2yrs nearby (Amherst).

Mini - Quick clarification: Scripps is in a consortium with a grad school (actually, two of them, although KGI is much smaller and I can't think of anyone taking courses there). Courses at Claremont Graduate University are often open, though (I've also had numerous CGU students in my Scripps courses). This doesn't at all change your point...I still agree with your claims. Having CGU and KGI on campus is very differerent than having the resources of an entire university (CGU and KGU are odd in themselves b/c they're stand-alone graduate schools). Just wanted to give the full picture.

Shrinkrap -- Ha! I said "A Scripps student who spent a semester studying at Scripps," and you asked if I meant "A Smith student who spent a semester studying at Smith." All through my original post, I mixed up the two names. Oy. I meant a Scripps student who spent a semester studying at Smith. Thank you for catching my error.

"Women of Distinction is a program for high school seniors that highlights the opportunities at Smith College for African American, Asian American, Latina and Native American students. Participants of this three-day program will have an opportunity to explore Smith and see if it might be an appealing college choice for them. Students will stay in campus houses, experience the academic and social life at Smith and attend panels and workshops on student life and the college admission process.

Admission to Women of Distinction is a competitive process based on academic and personal qualities. Smith will provide round-trip transportation, meals and accommodations for all selected participants. "

Smithieandproud says "Chicago O'Hare is the WORST, if you have to route through there, make sure you have a lot of layover time, or you're good with prayer, because you're going to run into problems. "

Agent is suggesting an hour in O'hare is better than 3 hours in Dallas.....DD is GREAT with prayer...

D has consistently flown through Chicago in lieu of D.C., at least getting further westward for the time spent, and so far, knock on wood, has had no problems, though once she beat a snowstorm closing down O'Hare by less than 30 minutes.

Snow is not a problem this early in the year but can be sometimes at Thanksgiving or Winter break. It can even be an issue for Spring break some years. Our D, flying from Seattle, has usually changed in Mlps, Detroit or Cincinnati. She did get stuck in Cincinnati on her way home in Dec her first year at school, due to an ice storm. She hates having to go through Cincinnati ever since.
Ellen

Well, it's true, O'Hare is better than three hours in Dallas. You probably won't have that much in the way of snow issues, and if you do, I mean, at least Smith is footing the bill.

She is just back, a little sleepy, and studying furiously for two tests tommorow, but said she was at Park and shared a few details about shopping and ice cream in Northampton...

Not much. She seems awfully superficial in her likes and dislikes at this stage. She likes it and wants to apply, but prefers Scripps dorms and distance from home.I keep hoping she'll go "college confidential" on me soon! Ok, maybe not...
