Washington U. Announces Addition of Women's Golf

St. Louis, Mo., February 8, 2008 Washington University Director of Athletics John Schael has announced the addition of womens golf to its intercollegiate athletics program to begin play during the 2008-09 season. Director of Intramurals and Club Sports Sean Curtis, who has coached the team the past two seasons while participating at club status, will lead the squad.

With the addition of womens golf, Washington U. boasts 19 intercollegiate athletic teams, including 10 varsity womens programs. Womens golf is the first sport added at Washington U. since softball made its varsity debut in 2000.

"With the support of the Universitys administration and Gender Equity Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, we are pleased to provide a new opportunity for Washington Universitys students in competitive intercollegiate athletics," said Schael. "I am proud of the students who laid the foundation for intercollegiate golf and I look forward to the programs continued growth, development and advancement."

Washington University becomes the second school in the University Athletic Association (UAA) to field a womens golf team, joining New York University. Currently there are 155 schools in Division III that sponsor womens golf as a varsity sport.

This very exciting for women golfers, but for male golfers like me should be excited too since now there is a better chance for a Men's golf team to emerge as well. I don't know if they already have created a men's golf team, and just haven't announced it, or their isn't one yet. I just hope there will be a Men's golf team next year. If there is one, I'll definately apply to WashU!
