Hello CC!
I have recently learned about SHA at Cornell and it seems like a great fit for me. I have an interest in entrepreneurship and actually getting “hands-on” learning rather than a typical class/lecture. From what I read on SHA’s site, the school seems like a good fit for me. The real question is of course would SHA take me? That’s where I would like some peer advice.
Now, onto the real points of discussion:
I will be going into my junior year, these are my academics for Freshman + Sophomore years.
GPA (Unweighted): 4.0 or 97%/100%
Rank: Top 10%
PSAT: 213 (Sophomore year)
ACT: 31 when I took a practice aprox. 10 months ago. Currently studying for the ACT, redesigned SAT, and current SAT.
Realistically I would like to have above a 33/2150/1480; from what teachers have said to me it seems plausible. Not too sure though.
Extracurricular activities: About 7-8 things in school. Small prayer group, student council, chess club, mass setup, Columbian Squire, spanish club, social studies club. Golf team next year. Nothing too spectacular for Ivy League admissions.
Outside of school: I work ~40 hours a week at a local, private golf course through a local program. My job consists of greeting very well-to-do people (one familiar member rhymes with Loomberg), delivering food, maintaining the course to an extent, maintaining the driving range, accommodating members that stay at the clubhouse (there are hotel rooms there), and pretty much anything a member or guest needs. So I guess it is a hospitality job?
I also run my own business which I advertise in 8 local papers. Just simple IT repair and tutoring computers and middle school level academics. I have been doing this for about 4 years now.
Good amount of volunteering, but nothing major: Relay for Life and a small charity my best friend founded after other best friend (his twin) died of childhood cancer in 7th grade. We will typically sell bracelets/candies/etc. for childhood cancer research or Make A Wish.
Also very interested in global markets + stock market, but no activities to show for it, unless you count making around $2.5k profit one summer trading online.
BOTTOM LINE: Is this a realistic choice? If not does anyone know of less competitive business/hospitality/entrepreneur programs?
Thanks. If anyone could help me out I would be ever grateful and more than willing to help you out with anything on the forum, but I don’t know many things about the college process.
edit: Tried to keep only relevant activities here to save some time, but I forgot that I took a course on Mathematics and Money through Johns Hopkins’ CTY program. Not really relevant besides the course had to do with business/finance/etc.
Thanks in advance friends!
