Just curious to see what my chances are to getting into colleges (esp NYU), also going to take the SAT again to score higher (hopefully 1400) and also take the ACT. my test scores aren’t super amazing so just curious what my chances are, esp. because my GPA is really high (mostly straight A student with exception with a B in ap physics)
Based on your present stats (SAT score & AP scores), NYU-Stern, USC, UCLA, Georgetown, UPenn & Berkeley are unrealistic target schools. Don’t waste your money on applications to these schools.
BC is a slight reach, but within reason. Northeastern is also a reach (your SAT score is about 100 to 120 points too low for Northeastern to be considered a match).
Emerson should admit you.
BU is a match.
P.S. NYU-Stern is almost impossible with your SAT score as the math portion is way too low. You might have a chance at Gallatin (not sure of spelling or another less selective school at NYU–but it will be expensive.)
P.S. What is your state flagship school ? Are you willing to disclose your state of residence ? If not, then consider your in-state public school options. Right now your list is unrealistic.
You won’t know if you are a match for the non-reach schools until you take another stab at the SAT or ACT. Right now, the vast majority of your list would be a big reach. Even Emerson I would say would be a match, not a safety.
Also be aware that NYU is notoriously stingy with aid and the CA schools give none for out of state applicants. Not sure where you live or what your family can afford but that is usually a consideration for most students.
I think all the schools on your list are reaches, with the possible exception of Emerson. BTW, marketing is a subfield of business at most schools, and many of the schools on your list have VERY competitive business programs. How strong are you in math?
I live in so cal so University of California. Trying to get my math score up on SAT as it should be at least a 700 since I have gotten that on practice SAT’s. What schools do you reccommend that I apply to? I know my list is very unrealistic but haven’t found many schools that have a good business/marketing major where I can dance in a minor or outside of the school…Looking for schools on the east coast as that is just what I prefer, but open to schools anywhere honestly. UCLA and USC are too close to where I live for my liking but I’d obviously go there if I had the chance. Univ. of Oregon is my safety school. Have looked into Fordham but parents say it’s too expensive for that school (even though I think NYU’s cost is higher, but more prestigious). I need to expand my college list but don’t know what schools to consider.
I consider myself pretty good at math, the only problem is that my SAT scores don’t match up to my math grades. in honors algebra 2/trig right now and lowest test score I got so far is a 96. Smarter people at my school are in honors alg 2/trig as sophomores but I’m planning on skipping pre calc and taking AP calc ab next year to make up for not being in advanced math.
What is your budget? University of Colorado at Boulder has a good business school and a dance program. The private University of Denver has a good business program with lots of internship opportunities, but no dance degrees, although you could certainly find places to keep dancing in Denver. Neither of these is cheap… DU may offer you some small merit money based on your stats but it’s not a school known for good aid. Boulder will cost $55K+ per year.
You know what school I’d like to see you look at? Butler University. They are supposed to be the real deal in ballet, and I think they have a respectable marketing major as well.
I think you have a reasonable chance at NYU if you can get your SAT score up. There are SEVERAL more sittings of the SAT between now and application time if you are a junior, so keep working at it!
Stern has an admit rate in single digits now. You’d probably need a SAT in the upper 1400s to be considered.
Also have you confirmed you can minor in dance from Stern? Not all minors are available across all schools afaik.
NYU has a minor in dance through special programs, not Tisch itself, and i’m pretty sure from what i’ve looked into i would be able to minor in cross-schools… if not it’s new york so there’s other places to dance or take classes (steps on broadway)
Taking the March SAT and hoping the curve and my score will be better than the November SAT.
Doubt it’ll be in the upper 1400’s so there is an extremely small chance of me getting into NYU stern… sad but stern is very hard to get into. I’ll cross my fingers and get those test scores up
@balletdancer: An interesting option might be the College of Charleston in gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina. You may qualify for a scholarship & get into the Honors College.
College of Charleston has about 9,100 full time students. Most study business, but visual & performing arts is also quite popular.
Your class rank & GPA are outstanding, so why not entertain some scholarship offers ?
Another fun option with low cost & for which you may be awarded a partial scholarship is Flagler College in historical & beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. Flagler has about 2,600 students and most study business or communications, but it also has a sizable performing arts major.
I do not recall, but Flagler might be right across from the beach.
You have really great stats, just improve that SAT and your chances of admission will improve at most of those schools. I personally was able to bump my SAT from a 1370 my junior year to 1440 my senior year, and I’m a horrible test taker, so from experience I can tell you not to lose hope! I’d just suggest you study as much as possible for it or get a tutor. You still have a lot of time to see the improvement you’re looking for.
Parents suggested Georgetown to me, and I think if I got into NYU I could be able to go because both are more prestigious than Fordham. When I first got an email from Fordham parents told me that I wouldn’t apply there bc cost, but later brought up Georgetown bc it has a good marketing program. I originally brought up interest in NYU due to the dance program at Tisch, but now realized that I’m better off doing a minor in dance for what I want.
I got a tutor before my first SAT, who recommended I take the November test date, so that was a last minute decision to take that test. Planning on going through a sat math test book and going through all right practice tests again in hopes of getting my score up for the March sat.
Take a close look at the University of Richmond - they have an undergraduate marketing major in the Robins School of Business and a very strong dance department. If you’re committed to at least minoring in dance, there are dance-specific Artist Scholar awards within the Richmond Scholars program. Richmond is a solid match that’s stronger in your stated areas of interest (and the ability to combine them) than most of the other schools on your list. The city of Richmond has a lot to offer as a setting, as a state capital that also has a lively arts scene. https://robins.richmond.edu/undergraduate/marketing/index.html https://theatredance.richmond.edu/major-minor/dance.html https://theatredance.richmond.edu/scholarships/index.html
