Woodrow Wilson Fellowship

Has anyone, especially internationals, received the JHU admission packet in the mail yet?

I'm hoping to see whether I got the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship or not, since that would likely seal the deal for me on whether I should go to Johns Hopkins.

Also, how competitive is the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship?

I am not sure about the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, but I just received my admission packet in the mail.

I received mine today (with the Woodrow Wilson acceptance inside :D) but I’m not an international

I received one as well. Could anyone please shed some light on this subject?

It’s a $10,000 research grant to start your own research project supervised by a faculty member of your choice.

From the website:

"Intrigued by the idea of hands-on, independent learning with top-level faculty mentors? The Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity to do just that. It is for Arts & Sciences students who are excited by the possibilities, challenges, and rewards that go along with conducting their own research.

At Johns Hopkins, asking questions is just as important as answering them. No matter what you have in mind, we will give you not only the freedom to ask the questions but also the resources to find the answers. Students in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences routinely work with their advisers to shape their own courses of study, and approximately 70 percent of all Hopkins undergraduates engage in some form of meaningful research during their time here. The Wilson Research Fellowship helps students achieve their research goals and furthers President Gilman’s original vision.

In the humanities, Wilson Research Fellows have:

 • Examined the architectural styles of Jain and Hindu Temples in India.

In the social sciences, Wilson Research Fellows have:

* Investigated the process of democratization in Romania

 • Explored public health issues pertaining to the elderly in Latin America.
 • Studied faith-based urban community development organizations.
 • Examined the ramifications of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa.

In the natural sciences, Wilson Research Fellows have:

* Investigated microbiotics for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

 • Studied prenatal cocaine and methamphetamine use and their effects on the unborn.
 • Explored landmine detection using bioluminescent bacteria.
 • Analyzed cognitive dysfunction associated with sleep deprivation.

Beginning in their freshman or sophomore year, Wilson Research Fellows benefit from working closely with highly respected faculty mentors on independent research projects.

* Each Wilson Research Fellow receives funding of up to $10,000 over four years (up to $7,500 for sophomores) to be spent on research costs, which may include travel, equipment, and use of archives or laboratories. (The fellowship may not be used as a stipend, nor may it be used as financial aid.)

 • Students create and pursue research projects with help from their faculty mentors. As seniors, Wilson Research Fellows publicly present their work to the Hopkins community.
 • Throughout their undergraduate years at Hopkins, Wilson Research Fellows may choose to work within one field, either focusing on a single long-term project or exploring several aspects of that field. Fellows are also free to undertake projects in totally diverse areas of study."

Plus they get a really cool gold medallion to wear at graduation!

It’s all the about the bling! jk

If you applyed ED but haven’t found out whether you’re accepted to JHU yet can you still proceed to apply for the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship? I find out on Dec 15 so its close but still…

Yes, you can still apply now. They selected Wilson Fellows after they know who has gotten accepted to the university, but if you apply now, it won’t help or hinder your normal application in any way.

About how many applicants to the fellowship are there, and how many get accepted?

Thanks hopkid :)

No problem, ayjaytee

Luciferlied - I’m not sure how many applicants usually apply for the Fellowship, but there are about 15-20 fellows per class year.

It’s also possible to be given the Fellowship without actually applying. I don’t think it happens very often, but it has happened.
