How serious does this have to be? I mean are you bound to the project you state you want to puruse on the app? How competitive is it? How do they select the winners? Are humanities projects more likely to be accepted than science projects? What kind of background of research do they want? who evaluates these applications? Just the ad com or the faculty too? thanks!

Wow lol ok I'll tell you what i know and what i think. My assumption would be since it is indeed considered in the reading of the application towards admissions, Yes i would estimate that it is serious. I am pretty sure you are in no way bound to the project idea you list. As to the competitiveness, because relatively few projects are selected, again my geuss would be it is competitve, however I am no sure how many applications they receive (they have at least one, lol, mine) We dont find out whether we got them or not until April i think the package says. I believe it is read my professors and staff (since the director of the fellowship program is a professor). Thats basically what i know, not much but im trying lol

yea i agree with abrandel, and since the students who apply to this fellowship PROBABLY wont be submitting some science project they did for a week back in 8th grade, i'm prettys ure its competitive. also, there are students who got and will be accepted to hopkins that have worked extensively at labs and also won competitional (either regional or national or maybe even international), i'd say its pretty tough. just as an example, out of the four students who got accepted ED to hopkins from my school, there worked in a lab for 2 years and has done pretty good research...so i dont think its something u can just submit some BS to.

yeah, i definatly don't think it's going to be cake or anything... i was just wondering how detailed i should be in the project proposal part compared to the "past experience" stuff. i've done research in the humanities not science, but I have two project ideas for science... I dunno. how long was your wilson application essay?

oh and are you picked on the basis of your idea or your past experience in research?

for the wilson fellowship, i sent two abstracts of the two research projects i did. then in addition to that, i sent a short paragraph about what id like to do in continuation of my project. but for the application in general, i sent a copy of my latest research paper, which was 20 pages long. but that was just to show the type of work ive been doing, i didnt expect them to read through it or anything and it wasnt for the fellowship. so i guess for the fellowship itself would be the essay adn the abstracts.

i summarized 3 projects i worked on (1 in each lab i have worked in) and gave some insight into the kinds of general stuff we've done and are continuing to work on. Then i gave a reasonably detailed description of a line of research i would be interested in pursuing including backgrounds and some selected references for the proposal. all in all it was 4 pages

Edit OH ya, i also sent in a paper we're submitting for publication (~25 pages) and a copy of my CV (4 pages)

sounds really interesting and good luck to both of you! thanks for the info!

hey, i was accepted early, but i didnt submit the wilson supplement with my app. can i still submit it and be considered?

the deadline for wilson is feb. 2005 so i guess so.
