Word Limit - Essays

Hey guys,

I was wondering about the word limit on essays. It states that it has a word limit of '500 words or less' but how picky are they with this rule? Obviously, I'm not talking 2000 words but would I get hassled or my essays discarded if my essay was about 550?

Thanks for all the help

I think you should try to shorten it to about 530 words, but 550 might be okay. They're not going to count it. Just write small. :)

Where in Canada are you from? What schools are you applying to?

I'm a Montreal guy and I'm applying to Andover/Exeter. You?

I was born in Ottawa and I'm here right now, but I live in Michigan with my mom during the school year. I'm applying to Andover, St. Paul's, Taft, MX, and Choate, and possibly Hotchkiss, Exeter, or Groton.

my mom just got back from toronto last night. is there a reason all of my canadien relatives are 10 times cooler than my american ones?

what grade u applying for canadian kid

Actually, my essay was like 534. The school's aren't going to count the words, if they did...they won't.. 550 is fine, but shortening it won't hurt.

Any one do Hotchkiss's Essay? Do they want it typed or hand written?

You can complete Hotchkiss's app online.

Oh really? Thanks!

Are you sure, warriorboy? Is it on infosnap like Choate and SPS?

It's not on infosnap. I know because we finished it today.

Yes you can complete Hotchkiss' application online. However, according to their website:
"If you have already submitted your Preliminary Application in hardcopy form, you must submit the Formal Application in that manner. "
Also, they caution you about taking the SSAT in January:
"Applicants who sit for the January exams will still be considered during the regular admission cycle, but not until their test scores are received. We encourage you to attend to this requirement as soon as possible since registration deadlines come well in advance of the test dates. "
jennycraig, you gave me heart failure for a minute. We did do the preliminary app online so we are ok. Interestingly, it was Hotchkiss that suggested that we also do the Jan test because kids tend to score better the second time.

That stinks. i mailed the preliminary app. yesterday!

what grade u applying for canadian kid -- Capriatifan

Well I'm going to graduate from the Quebec high schools this year (so that means Grade 11) but apparently most guys re-do grade 11 in preps so I'm just following their path.

for Andover, they say is it okto have a typed essay. 500 words, though. So it is ok if it is lie 540ish????

On the online applications, is there a word limit for the short answers part?

Scigirl14...40 more words is alright. Its at most two sentences longer so they won't even notice.

There's a character limit on the online apps.

does anyone think that admissions will look negatively on the fact that one of my essays is 499 words, and the other is 326?
