Work Study

I don’t think this was answered, but yes, you can transfer your work study amount to a perkins loan. This helps a lot, especially when you don’t get much in grants because your family makes too much (when they can’t help you at all…). By doing this you automatically get the work-study amount, and you don’t have to balance work and study for it. It also means you can get a part time job without worrying about your work-study job! I did this my first year. I had a part time job about 5 minute walking distance from my apartment. Paid very well, too (performance-based wage)!

Of course, this is a loan, meaning the money will have to be payed back (eventually). Good news is that the interest rate is the lowest around, at 5%!

Can you tell me more about being an RA?
I heard it provides you with housing and meal points?
Is it difficult to qualify and is it a lot of work?
I’m thinking about doing it my sophomore year…

RA stands for resident advisor or research assistant?

Can you use the workstudy at another school? Even though you are not enrolled at that school. For example, I live by LMU and they are willing to hire if I have workstudy which I do but it’s for UCSD. Is the workstudy transferrable? Also, can workstudy be used by employers outside as well, like private employers? Or does it cancel if I work for a private company?

Thanks for the help.

What would you guys consider good work study jobs? I was looking through the job listings on Port Triton, and there were only two jobs in my field of study (math/econ or business management), both of which required some form of office experience, which I have none of. Therefore, I need to just take another job.

I’ve heard bad things about dining hall jobs, but I heard you can get a promotion to supervisor and the free meals aren’t that bad either.

can anyone tell me what the best paying jobs on campus are? i have both office and retail experience. but the wage doesn’t really matter as long as you get the $2800 of work study over the course of the year, right? do you just stop working if you get the max amount of money you can from work study before the year’s over? are there instances of students keeping their jobs when they run out of work study?

How were you able to log onto Port Triton?

I tried but I was never able to log in. Were we suppose to sign up for an account or anything, or is the password we use suppose to be the same one we use on Tritonlink?

Your login ID and password should both be your Student PID number.

I tried that but didn’t work for me… Do we have to pay?

New Admit or Re-Admit UC San Diego Students:
Students who are new admits or re-admitted to the University and who have paid their UC San Diego Statement of Intent to Register Fee (or are EOP: S.I.R. waived) may use the services at the Career Services Center one quarter prior to attendance by paying a pre-quarter access fee of $20.

I think Freshmen get access when classes start unless we pay $20 to get on earlier.

So apparently once you get the smart grant your junior year, they take away work study.

That’s what happened to me, and it sucks because I’m a second year and I had a job that depended on it.

But a question: When I am in my fourth year, will they give me the smart grant also?

If im not mistaken you get the smart grant for the 3rd and 4th years in college. Plus it’s a lot better than work study and gives you a lot more money…

is it better to get a job at a higher wage and then have to work fewer hours to get all of your work study money? if you can get your work study money within like 15 weeks then you have time left over the rest of the year to do other things like get another job or become more active in clubs and stuff, right? do any of you recommend that?

If you can find a job that pays you a higher wage and you work less hours then that would be ideal, but that depends on work experience and i mean if you can find something like that then yeah that’s the best option.

well i was looking at port triton and there are tutoring jobs off campus that pay a lot more. but it’s limited to just work study and however many hours you work until you fulfill that. you can’t continue to work after. so in the case that i take something like that, i wouldn’t have a job for the rest of the year. so i was thinking of taking a non work study job after or get more involved in student life, etc. i guess that would be pretty good…

but the thing i have against it is that it wouldn’t be an on campus job so i wouldn’t have that experience of working on campus. other options would be library worker or something. i have office and retail experience…but i see no retail on port triton and the office jobs seem a little intimidating.

can anyone tell me how the office jobs are? pressure-wise and stuff.

Well if that’s the case I suggest that you find a job on campus that will allow you to continue working after work study is over. Or you can do student activity stuff, but i mean you can do that while youre working… But that’s my opinion… Or you can find a job outside of school and commute back and forth, but staying on campus will save with gas and the hassle of finding parking.

thanks disaster7777! yeah, i’ve kind of decided on that too. on campus is best and i want a job where i can get involved in student life and stuff. and an off-campus job will be secondary…if i could fit it in o.o

hopefully i can cuz i think it’d be really cool to work in like a mall or something by the campus.

Ok, this is probably a really stupid question but how do you get a work study award? is it only need based or is it merit based? or do you just send in fafsa and hope you get it?

Need based, part of your financial aid package if you qualify.

ok so if i want to do like a retail job, like working in a cafe or some place on campus, are those jobs not listed on port triton? do i have to go about it like i would a normal job, just on campus instead? dropping off resumes at different places…etc?
