Working ahead..

I'm going to get a head start in terms of what I am going to learn in my freshman year. I'm going for Ross at the end of freshman year so I'm aiming to get a GPA north of 3.9.

So far, the only class that I know I definitely have to take in the first year is Econ 101. What other classes will be recommended or necessary to get into Ross? Also, what resources (websites, books) can I look at over the summer to get some foreknowledge?

English 125 and Math 115 are also required for Ross.

The first year writing requirement and a calc class. Take at least one other QR course too that certainly makes your app look better. Also, I’d say work real hard but don’t focus solely on your GPA and ignore your EC’s, a look at some of the other threads here will show you cases where ppl have GPA’s north of 3.9 and getting crapped on because their EC’s were not good enough/non-existent. Also, work on your essays and make sure they shine. My friend is a 3.3 but got in due to amazing EC’s (i.e. freshman CA) and what I believe must have been awesome essays. I was just past a 3.6 and had fairly good EC’s and solid essays too (had like half a dozen Ross students look over them). Me and my friend will both be Ross sophomores this fall.

Are there any websites or books you could recommend (or that I will need) next year that I buy/look at beforehand so that I can get a head start?

I’d say just make sure you’re familiar with the info on the Ross site. Go to every app workshop that Ross holds and talk to any people you know who are in Ross. Start early on those essays and know why you really want to go to Ross. The essay really makes a difference and can make you stand out from the clones out there who simply want to secure a good job after they graduate.

I see. But in order to learn material for, say, Econ 101 or Math 115, where would I go?

Where can I see what material will be covered in these classes?

I’ve got IB credit for econ so I’m afraid I won’t be able to help. The calc book for calc 1 and 2 is “calculus: single variable 5th edition by hughes hallet”. But if you’ve done IB/AP/A level calc you’re def good to go for calc 1 and a bit of calc 2

I see. I have to check my IB results. They come out later today. I was predicted 44/45.

As far as having people review your essays go (which is a longer way off from first semester classes), I know that the Michigan Economics Society does essay workshops along with some other organizations. They usually have flyers about them in Lorch Hall. As far as classes go, beyond FYW and Math 115 I’d take classes that both interest and challenge you. Stats 250 is a safe bet for getting another QR in if you’d like to do that. Think of programs outside of Ross that you’re considering and maybe start doing the pre-reqs for that, just to keep your options open
