Working for a non-US company on an F-1 VISA

Hey guys,

Lets say my job is to write articles in German for a Germany based and registered company. I do that from home and would like to continue doing so from the US while in school on my F-1 VISA. I am technically not taking any job options for American citizens, but merely continuing my previous employment for my home country while physically being abroad. Is this allowed?

Thanks!

This should be no problem. You are essentially a contract employee being paid as though you were in Germany, in German funds, and (presumably) with your salary deposited straight into a German bank. What you earn “outside” the US isn’t an issue for your visa. It could be considered to be the same as though you were earning publishing royalties on something that you wrote before going to the US.

How this would be taxed is a whole different story. But that can wait until tax time next year.

happymomof1,

Does the same apply if I am from another country (not Germany), study in the U.S (F-1), and work for a German company from home?
