Worried about forgetting important subjects

To all you college students: When you guys began college, did the thought of forgetting important subjects ever cross your mind? For example, if you're going for an engineering major, forgetting (some) calculus, science subjects, etc.
I'll be reviewing over the summer so as to retain all of the information, but I'm worried that I might be left behind when classes start. Is this a valid concern, or will the first day of classes be a review of the pre-reqs?

If you learn the material well in high school, you shouldn’t have a problem picking it back up again in the fall. I didn’t do any school review the summer between high school graduation and freshman year, but I read a lot and everything worked out fine.

I generally found that in the first week, for technical subjects at least where some prior knowledge of a subject is required, is a review week. Although I guess this depends by professor.

Are you reviewing high school books? If so, I highly suggest you pack those books away and have fun during the summer.

College is much different than high school and your professors will teach you like you have never taken a calculus course in your life. They will explain simple concepts and formulas to you the first few weeks of class because not everyone took calculus in high school and some students didn’t get good grades high school calculus. Also, there many be upperclassmen and older student who put off taking calculus during freshman year and they may have forgotten all the calculus they learned in high school.

Enjoy your summer instead because once the first week of class is over, you will not have much time for spontaneous fun. Don’t worry, if you have good study habits, know how to manage your time, do your homework and attend class, you will get an A :)

Would that apply to higher classes? For example, I took AP Chem in high school and I got a 5. Since that is credit for intro chem, I would be placed into a higher chem class. Would the professor still review basic concepts, or would he/she move straight to the significant stuff?

That really depends on the professors teaching style. However, I find that even in higher level classes the professor will still “refresh” you on some of the basic concepts taught in the previous class. So if you did well inside of high school calculus, I think you will be okay. If you want to take your book to college, go ahead. I found reviewing my old algebra textbook in college helped me with certain lessons that didn’t make sense in the lectures.

But with that being said, you should still enjoy your summer and hang out with your high school friends while you have so much free time.
