Hi, I have pretty good writing skills, and can often write pretty solid essays, but I am very worried about my essay for the SAT. During the course of this year, I never prepared for the essay portion of the SAT, as I took review classes in Math (should have taken writing instead), and Critical Reading.

In my essay, I did not have any examples that related to historic events, such as the Nixon-Watergate Scandal. I had a few personal experiences, but didn't incorporate any examples that related to historic events.

My essay was a solid 2 page, 4 paragraph essay. 1 paragraph for introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and 1 conclusion.

Will my lack of examples that relate to history hurt my grade?

How much does the essay count for the writing section?
If i did well overall on the writing section, and received a 7-9 on my Essay, how would that hurt my grade?

Thank You.

Sorry this came up twice.
My browser said it timed out, so I had to re-write and send it again.
Can an admin delete the other one, please :/

Okay, so, if you get a 10 on your essay you should still be able to get an 800 in the writing section ( granted you answer all of almost all of the MC questions correctly)

The first time i took the SATs I got an 8 on my essay. It was a piece of crap and I used personal examples.

The second time, however, i got a 10, and I used a book example ( east of eden!) and a reference to a famous psychologist. I have to say, though, that essay grading is really subjective. Sometimes i feel like they give bad essays good grades, but well written ones poor grades. I guess it really depends on who’s grading your paper. But i really do not think that not having historical examples will hurt your paper. dont worry, you’ll do fine!

if you recieved a 7-9 on your essay you will still be able to score well, but probably low 700s since for some reason the essay is a large factor of the writing grade =X

I say, before you write your essay, like days before, just think about books and movies and things that have really profound themes that can connect to a wide variety of topics. Essays are usually " pick a side". do you believe or do you not believe? A lot of literature connects to this stuff, so if you have one literary example and one personal experience ( try to add humor, make it up, who cares) then im sure you’ll do fine! If it makes you feel better, i got a 10 on my essay but i still got an 800 b.c i answered the MC right. Just keep a really open mind. I think it was by fluke though… i never get all the MC right

BTW, do you know how to post a new thread? i’m new to this and do not know how to create a new thread =[

Thanks for the quick response, I feel a bit more reassured :)

I feel a need to reply here. In my essay, I used one huge personal example and then one from a piece of literature. It won’t hurt you if you used a personal example if it was meaningful enough, but did you have anything else? If that was it, then you might have some issues…
Oh, btw, I got an 11 on my essay.

If you wrote two full pages, you should be ok. I believe that the essay scores still tend to show a correlation with the length of the essays (for native English speakers).
