Oh wait. It wasn't "Black Boy", it was "Native Son." That was the worst book ever.

Thoreau's a great writer

Oh no, I GOT the references, I just thought it was terribly boring and uselessly descriptive..
the most interesting scene was an ANT FIGHT
come on!!!
I did like the philosophy, I'll give him that much.

AND OMG, Native Son was a REALLY GOOD BOOK!
I liked the "Polishing the Nightstick" scene...lol, that was hilarious

I apologize, I am a parent lurking here--saw the thread title and had to take a look. Manu, my son had to read "Walden" for a class last semester and I realized that I had never read it----so I bought a copy for myself and undertook the task. Can't say I enjoyed it anymore as a 50year old than I would have as a 20 year old. However, there was one line that spoke to me---something about if one has to buy new clothes and dress up in order to do an activity, it probably isn't worth doing. That is my new rule!!!

lol
that's funny...
I mean, I agreed with a lot of things Thoreau said.
Like, the idea that "each drummer marches to his own beat."
which is a really famous saying that talks about how people should be unique and different, as much as they want to be...etc, etc.
But yes, I remember that line, it was quite interesting...

And see, I have proof that Walden is boring! lol

I hated The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour

The Good Earth-Pearl S. Buck.

That ruined the summer before 9th grade for me haha.
yet for some reason i still remember the name Wang Lung.

mkm56 - i agree (except for things like sports type uniforms. those are an exception. And costumes for plays, although I don't act)

defiantely freaky friday. read it when I was like 8. Never found a book that compares to how bad that one was.

oh, and their eyes were watching g-d. The only assigned book that I didn't finish reading. It was just so bad.

On Language

Noam Chomsky

The reason I am not applying to mit, other than the fact I probably wouldn't get in.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this one yet, but

THE DA VINCI CODE.

The most horribly-written book on the face of the planet, absolutely no contest. Whatever redeeming plot twists there were completely wilted under Dan Brown's terrible writing style.

Anything by Koontz or Stephen King or those authors. Yuck.

I loved The Giver!!

the two most boring books i ever read for school were both from 10th grade.
my antonia
ethan frome

painful.

I actually want to read that book... is it really that bad? haha

The Scarlet Letter, hands down

Sophie's World

Ugh.

Okay, how can anyone hate The Giver or The Handmaid's Tale??! They're awesome. So is The Scarlet Letter, but I can at least understand where the hatred comes in there for some people.

Prozac Nation is a pretty bad book. Same with anything I've ever tried to read by Jane Austen (Emma, Sense and Sensibilities, and Pride and Prejudice).

Ethan Frome, Pride and Prejudice, The Good Earth, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Romeo and Juliet

I really disliked Catcher in the Rye, I couldnt stand it.

My favorites are Farewell to Arms, Ethan Frome, and Catch-22.

Martha, we can't be friends anymore, because you don't like Huck. Shaaaame. ;)
