Worst Nightmare Realized! Help!

"Because your application was not completed by the deadline, we're not able to consider you for admission at this time. Late applications are considered only if space remains available."

There was an issue with my transcripts, I had everything submitted on time but after checking and seeing that they hadnt received my transcripts by 1/31... (I submitted a request to my school for all my transcripts to be mailed to my schools in mid-December)... I immediately submitted another transcript request that they received on 2/13.

Now my status page has the quote listed above, I realize this post is a bit late, but It wasnt until now that I noticed that that bit of information was even there (I was told by other that universities were more lenient with transcipt deadlines so I though I might be OK).

Now what? Im just outside the top 10% so im not guaranteed admission anyway... but my scores are top-notch, 790 on math, 760 on reading. Should I contact the admissions office about this? Do I even stand a miniscule chance of being accepted? (I applied to McCombs first choice, college of liberal arts as 2nd)

Im dying here!

It can not do any harm to contact the admissions office and try to speak with them. At the same time, however, I don't want to give you false hope. A close friend of my son's got some materials in late to UT last year. Despite the fact that he was a National Merit Scholar, he was not considered for admission.

What does it mean when they say "Space remains"

Besides all the numbers and scores my EC's and everything are fine.... this is really killing me though, even if I get into my other schools, due to money considerations UT was a primary choice, I had 1 other safety school and a few reaches.

The odds of me getting into Rice/Columbia/Penn are slim, NYU is possible, but if I get rejected from those... my life is over! (The other safety school would mean living at home and driving to TCU... I cant wait to leave home so having to spend another year-4years at home at a college that I never expected actually having to attend!)

This is terrible, I cant even describe what Im feeling... if I dont get in....

Sogui...

Call immediately. I was told by UT Admissions this week they had 27000 applications for 9000 spots, of which approximately 75% will be filled by auto admits. That means 20000 applicants competing for approximately 2200 remaining spots. You need to talk to a live admissions counselor about your situation AND you need your counselor to also call and explain that your registrar's office caused the error.

And, if you are NMF, you do have some other options. OU and UF are giving full or near full rides to NMF with automatic admit into their Honors programs. UF, in particular, is highly ranked and has a residential college system for honors students. I believe both schools have flexible application deadlines for NMF. UF has a funky rule about being designated first choice by March 1, but it's possible that can be negotiated.

Good Luck!

Also, if UT doesn't work out, contact Texas A&M. They are not as inundated with auto-admits and seem to have little more of a personal touch with regard to Admissions. We get personal calls several times a week from counselors asking if our d has questions about her scholarships or her acceptance. And they offer generous scholarship money based on SAT scores...our D rec'd a near full ride. (She got a likely from UNC-Chapel Hill, so I think that is were she is headed, but Texas A&M was one of her favorite safeties because of scholarship money and because she had a great Summer Honors experience there.) And if rankings are important to you, Texas A&M and UT are practically ranked the same.

Try and have your school call them up and tell them it was their fault. good luck. It really isn't your fault and you shouldn't be punished. Continue to go to your school and UT and talk to them until someone listens.

Im calling the admissions office today, but its Spring Break for us and I wont be able to get talk to my counselor/the registrar about any errors until next Monday tops...

even then, is there any way of proving that it was the error lied in their field? They make you apply for transcripts on tiny little pieces of papers that even the secretary admitted to me once that the registrar who processes them doesn't pay alot of attention to detail... they simply scan the paper for college named grab a handfull of transcripts and mail them out at their convenience. (When I realized UT hadn't received my transcript I went in applied for another transcript to be sent, and UT didnt get it for 2 weeks).

Hopefully when I talk to UT today they will be understanding, and my school registrar will be able to send something to UT recognizing that it was their error, but even then... with UT already ADMITTING most of their student body at this point, non top 10% and everything... can they even do anything?

EDIT: Other colleges are mostly out of the question, my interest in UT is mostly centered around McCombs which is probably once of the most excellent undergrad business programs in this state, if I dont get into UT and my "Reach" universities reject me, then I will most likely attend TCU for a year and build up good credentials and a ~4.0 GPA and try to transfer in.

That brings up another question, if worse comes to worse, is it possible to transfer into the Business Honors Program from another school as a sophomore?

Also, should UT be unable to do anything about my situation at this point, what are the odds of me getting in which "Space Remaining"... if UT determines that they do in-fact have "Space Remaining," is it reserved for the top 10% applicants who turned their items in late.... or are the remaning applications decided by overall merit? What are my odds at this point if UT tells me today that things are out of their hands?

being out of the top 10%, from my understanding, makes it hard to get into McCombs. What are your reaches?

But yeah, I would talk to your school as much as possible. Tell them to call UT. First be diplomatic but if nothing happens throw a fit. It is a public school in texas right? It is the greater state of texas's fault. You shouldn't be penalized.

I dunno about throwing a fit, and yes I realize McCombs is nothing easy to get into "remaining space" there is laughable, but from what I understand if McCombs rejected me I could still get into the College of Liberal Arts and possibly transfer into McCombs as a Sophomore assuming that I kept everything in order.

Right now im just struggling to get in there, any information (even anecdotes) about what happens to those who are in my situation would be highly appreciated, ill be calling their office in a couple hours.

UT has a great Economics degree program within the College of Liberal Arts...this may be a very good pathway into McCombs.

Regarding transcripts/registrar's office, your school sounds very similar to my d's school. Without pointing fingers at anyone, perhaps your counselor could make UT aware that sometimes transcript turnaround is as much as two weeks due to the size of your h.s., and ask that you not be penalized since you did request the transcript in a timely manner. UT, with it's huge unwieldy admissions system should be able to relate to how complicated things can get in the registrar's office of a big high school.

Btw...one of the 'candidates' on The Apprentice was UF Honors undergrad who went on to receive her MBA at Harvard. So definitely don't rule UF out...it's a great school. (wish I had a better anecdote more directly related to your problem).

Best of luck with this very unfair situation sogui!

I did in fact apply under an Economics Major in the College of Liberal Arts as my 2nd choice, McCombs being the first of course.

I talked with the office today and they say that I should send them a fax addressed to their Appeals Comittee regarding why it was the school's fault and not mine, I should be able to get my counselor to send in a supplemental fax also explaining the situation with the transcript.

My counselor is very understanding and would most likely help.

I will start looking into UF and make a decision about sending an app their shortly as well, thanks for the support!

TCU is a pretty badass school, I don't see a problem if you have to attend it as a "safety school". Fort Worth is definately the most quality city in the state of Texas. Sometimes wish I went to TCU.

lol yeah right hookemhorns. Fort Worth is far from being the "most quality city in the state of Texas"...

I don't know if this helps, but last year I turned in my application materials for BHP in about a month late and they told me the same thing about being considered at the end and if space remains. Come April, I was admitted to the Business Honors Program. I did write a letter to the admissions committee explaining why my application was late. Good luck. Hook 'em

Well, i didn't send in my green card until later (month later than it was suppose to be), but they didn't say that... O_O that is the worst nightmare oh my gosh...

I lived in Fort Worth and that city is really ghetto. I would not live in there again...

fort worth does have its drawbacks but i prefer it over big d. heck, ft worths got 3 great art museums, a kick butt zoo, and billy bobs. of course most of the town is owned by 4 families(basses, carters, richardsons, and perots), but its still one of the best cities here in the great state of Texas.
