Worth going to Cal Poly Pomona instead of Cal State Fullerton?

Im going to major in Business Administration, but with a concentration in Computer Information Systems (CIS). My first pick is to go to Pomona, because i will be able to get away from my parents if i live on campus, which is what i want. I know its considered an engineering school, but college is college and theyre both in the CSU system anyways. Pomona also has a lot of perks for me, beautiful, “prestige” i say Cal Poly Pomona and people are like oooh… Cal Poly, sounds fancy, but this is more just for joke. Pomona also has small class sizes. Anyways, Pomona is my first choice, and of course i will have to pay more for room and board, but my EFC on the FAFSA is 0 since my family income is really low and my parents cannot afford to help me at all, so hopefully financial aid covers room board too or a lot of it.
Fullerton is my second choice. It is known more as a Business school. It is also my home school for my HS, its just a few miles away at most and the majority of Seniors will attend Fullerton… because its our home school. Now, if i attend here, i will live with my parents, which i would rather not, but i assume i will not have to pay as much.
Okay, now my big couple questions are, if i attend CSUF after Community College, will i still pay less than if i attended Pomona, because Fullerton is my High Schools home school? I assume i would not pay less, but i honestly have no idea. Also, i believe it is easier to get into Fullerton than Pomona, is this true, what about even as a transfer student? Do you guys think i will really have a problem in a couple of years getting the classes i need at Fullerton as a transfer student, because i think Fullerton gets full and impacted pretty easily and quickly, true? Lastly, which would you say i go to? I mean, i could drive to Pomona, but its about 30 minutes away via the 57, and i hear it gets traffic super bad at peak hours.

Please help me out anyone. Any help, feedback, suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

CSUF and Cal Poly Pomona are on the CSU system. They’re both almost the same cost but may vary by a few hundred dollars depending on what student fees they have. Just get a 3.5+++++++++++++++ in your CC and you’re guaranteed an acceptance to CIS… But you better work hard from the start because it might get impacted. Don’t let cost get in the way; even if it’s a couple thousands of dollars. And also, don’t get too overly worried about financial aid or anything until after you turn in FAFSA for when you transfer. Things can change and you can get some scholarships or something.

Edit: Not guaranteed like there’s a statement or anything. But do get good grades so you can be more competitive. EC’s don’t get taken into consideration at Pomona so don’t worry about that

@xxcapital Thanks! Yeah, i will be hellbent on getting the best GPA and grades i can in CC, i am aiming at at least a 3.5 gpa too. The strange thing is the average GPA for transfer students admitted to Pomona for Bus. Admin. major in 2013 was a 2.96 gpa… but it was by far the most popular major with 735 admitted, so that may raise selectivity? But still, thats quite low.

Also, lets say i got accepted by Fullerton and Pomona, considering the circumstances and detail in the OP, which would you say i go to or which would you go to if you were in my shoes?

With some years passing by, I’m sure the GPA will go up a bit by the time you get in. If I was stuck between all of the CSU’s and Cal Poly Pomona, I would pick Cal Poly SLO first then Pomona then Northridge/Long Beach/Fullerton, then whatever’s next. I put Northridge because word on the street, they have a pretty good IT program. I personally chose Pomona over UCI and UCSD even though it’s the more expensive route since I got a couple of school grants from UC’s.

if you have an option, go to Cal Poly Pomona. CSUF is a business school, but their CIS program is crap. They are more known for finance/accounting/econ type stuff. Cal Poly was one of the first to implement the CIS program into the College of Business. It is known as the Cal Poly Model throughout the nation. I wouldn’t even consider attending CSUF for CIS unless its a last ditch effort.

All the fees should be close to the same, albeit CPP is on the quarter system for the next few years while CSUF is on semesters.

@tehjoadsta Yeah, i was kinda thinking that too. I mean, look at how small their CIS minor/option is:
http://business.fullerton.edu/undergraduate/infosystems.htm</a>
Theres only five required courses (might be usual) and only two elective courses to choose to take. Doesnt sound like much to me.

What about Long Beach? CSULB is also an option, CSULA would also be a choice, but they have CIS as a direct major, so Gen Ed classes may be totally different and i may not have enough to transfer, but ill ask all about that with my counselor when the time for CC comes. Also, Dominguez Hills may be an option, but its a little on the far side and i dont know much about it and never really considered it. If it goes like this CSUP>CSUF, where do CSULB, CSULA, and CSUDH fit in there?

Also, since CPP is on the quarter system, not the traditional semester system, will the costs be much higher? I ask because i heard they charge you what would be semester fees, except for every quarter… like for example, if CSUF and CPP both cost the exact same, say $3000 a semester, CPP would instead charge you $3000 a quarter since they are on the quarter grading system. Is that true?

I don’t know much about the programs other than CSUF and CPP. CPP is vastly superior and I wouldn’t even consider CSUF. Well, I did consider them, but I was desperate to get back in school and CSUF accepts almost anyone. However, I was accepted into CPP and will be graduating this quarter in CIS.

The fees will even out in the end. It’s ~2k/quarter in tuition at CPP and that’s for 3 quarters. Summer fees are vastly different and you’ll figure that out if you elect to attend summer session. CPP will be transferring to the semester system in fall 2018. If you’re stuck in the transition period, then god help you.

General ed classes will be the same at all CSUs. Don’t even worry about that. A few things will change if you elect to go with a UC school, but nothing dramatic.
