I had planned to get a single next year (sophomore year) because I have had one of the worst dorming experiences as a freshman. The thing I am worried about is not actually being able to get the single because of how popular they are and end up being stuck with multiple roommates or at a dorm that is very far away from campus. Mind you, this single would be running at about $16.5K.

The thing is that I am from NJ so the commute is usually around 55 minutes from Linden to W. 4th Street (I go home on the weekends as of now). This would involve taking the train and then the subway.

Also, I calculated everything and would be saving about $34, 000 over the next 3 years.

My FA packaged is already good and not including housing/meal plan, this would lower the loans for myself and my mom considerably less.

Would this commute really be worth it? Thoughts, please.

You said it yourself, you’ll be saving $34,000 over the next 3 years.

I suggest commuting if money is a problem. Yeah, it will probably suck not living in the city, but you’ll be close by and you won’t be completely broke when you graduate.

My daughter has a friend who lives in the Bronx, and it takes her 50 minutes to commute, but she does it everyday. Plus she has a workstudy job on campus. Now, my daughter has never had a class on a friday since freshman year. As a senior, she alo doesnt have classes on Monday and she is taking 19 credits, so its possible to condense your day with classes so you can commute less days. Do you have any friends on campus? Maybe you can crash at their dorm during the week. Plenty of commuters do that. I also found that as a commuter student, there are accommodation options if you plan on staying in city late for studying or are taking exams and dont want to commute for a few days at 15.00 a night at the Greenwich Hotel Dorm.
