Would any of you guys ever consider joining the military?

I’d rather not.
It’s never ruled out, though.

idk if its true or not but i live on an 06/admirals base in hawaii and all the 06’s ive met have a masters. thats probably a good indication lol. thats not to say you won’t be able to be an 06 if you don’t have one. like i said, the military will pay for you to get it.

Well, I’m planning to do Army ROTC at Princeton via a crosstown agreement with TCNJ and major in nursing so I can join as a nurse and be an officer. I’m also going to compete for a 3 year scholarship so I can hopefully get my school paid for. Not a bad deal at all.

I don’t think I would ever join the military. I don’t like being shot at for some reason.

Me neither, but I just wait for the part where I get to shoot back.

I think it would get quite boring after a while (from my experience with FPS)

No. Never. I come from a military family and could never live that type of life.

My brother in law (RIP) was in the top 5% of his class, accepted to U of M, but instead decided to go into the Marines. Cost him his life.

Me? Personally, no. Only because I know I wouldn’t last longer than 10 minutes.

In real life, firefights don’t become boring. Every single one becomes your new worst nightmare.

I would never join the military. There’s a guy in my year who wants to go into the AFA despite having a 4.0 and a 2300 (the first of its kind where I’m from). I think it’s a waste of talent and I wish he’d do something more productive with his life. That said, it’s his choice.

I wouldn’t say that at all. The military is involved in a lot more than just warfare, and there’s such a variety of jobs in the military that to say that going to a service academy will lead to an “unproductive” life is ridiculous. I would never personally join the military but I would consider working through them in the capacity of a biomedical researcher.

It’s a waste of talent to join the military and serve your country? That’s one of the most offensive things I’ve read on this site and I’m disappointed its coming from a fellow Stanford student.

yepp. me too.

one of my friends just got the nomination for west point. im really happy for him. he has a near perfect GPA and high SAT scores and an athlete. i think its great! he is also applying to other top tier schools, colombia, brown, etc. but west point is his first choice.

I will not join the military on ideological grounds. World peace cannot be achieved by encouraging more people to take up arms.

was not aware people still believed in world peace

You, sir, win the award for the most ignorant post I have ever seen in my 3+ years on CC. I won’t even take the time to correct all the misinformation in this thread. If you want facts about the military and its academies from someone who actually knows what he’s talking about, PM me.

Wow…I can’t believe some of the ignorance on this thread coming from who I would like to believe are very intelligent people. Obviously not though. First of all, the military academies are some of the hardest schools to get into. Some would argue harder than the Ivy Leagues and they may have a point. Secondly, joining the military doesn’t automatically mean you “get shot at.” That’s probably the biggest misconception around. All the branches have a million different jobs, including desk jobs. Hell, you can be a priest or a cook in the military. Please people, don’t think you know everything about everything because you have a 2400 and 4.0. Do your research before posting.

*First of all, the military academies are some of the hardest schools to get into. Some would argue harder than the Ivy Leagues and they may have a point. *

I’m not saying they aren’t hard. They’re comparable to Top 25 schools. HYPS is obviously harder though with its 7% acceptance rate.

^ dude we get it. Stanford is hard as **** to get into, but you are obviously a bit biased (as am I)

And applicannot, YOU FAIL.

Consider watching the movie Lions for Lambs (Robert Redford/Meryl Streep). Doesn’t lean too far left or right, doesn’t really judge. I think it’s as “fair” as a (Hollywood produced) movie can be. It’s interesting in a lot of different ways.
