I'm debating between University of Chicago and Carnegie Mellon but I definitely have a lower chance at U of C, so I was wondering if I could keep both on my list if CM was a match but I'm not sure that it is :/

Stats:
11 honors total
4 AP classes (took Com. Sci. A sophomore year and got a 3)
also taking AP Euro, AP French and AP English this year

Extracurriculars:
~JV Tennis as freshman/sophomore & Varsity Tennis as Junior/Senior
~Key Club (service club) : >100 hours
awarded "golden member award" at district convention
ran for officer position every year but was never elected into a official position, but my adviser made me "Special Projects Manager" for my efforts and activity in the club..
~Fencing Club ...I.also technically have an "officer" position (our club isn't very big but a couple of students and I stayed with it until the following yr and got "officer" positions)
~French Honors Society- elected Historian
~National Art Honors Society
~National Honors Society
~also did some violin from October to June of last year and it was the first time I've ever played an instrument (is this worth noting????)

Lastly I'm confident about my teacher recommendations and pretty confident about my essays

Basically, what are my chances? Is it a match?

Yes, note the instrument part. And I would say it is a bit of reach unless you can raise your GPA and SAT. I’m not sure where you come from so correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m from Florida and a 4.2 GPA is a little bit low. I’m not sure how your county weighs GPA though, so don’t take it the wrong way! Other than that, definitely apply and write a good essay and get good recommendations. The best of luck to you!!

Definite reach. GPA is fine, but SAT scores are going to be a big problem. And if you’re applying to SCS, super-reach. CMU SCS is in line with the most competitive schools in the country in terms of admission.

I would say it’s a reach, but on a side note, the admissions officers don’t know that your fencing club is small and that you weren’t actually elected or that you were appointed “special projects manager” and not elected. Don’t mention all of that… just mention the position. You don’t have to be specific about how you got the position or how many other people are in the club, just about what holding that position entails (I.E. organizing big events or coaching freshmen, etc…).

Besides that, I recommend that you start bumping that SAT Math score up to at least 700 (might as well as bring the other ones up too while you’re at it) and take SAT IIs. Check each school to see which SATII tests they require because I know that CMU does require specific tests.

raise your sat to over 2000 and you would have a really good shot a Carnegie Mellon. if you raise your sat to around 2150-2200, you’d have a better chance at Uchicago.
good luck!!
