Would colleges dislike me taking APUSH next year if I had already took Honors U.S. History?

I’m taking Honors U.S. History, and I’m about to finish the year long course this year. I had a 98% last semester and a 100% this semester. I’m interested in taking APUSH, which stands for AP US History, next year as I have great interest in American history. Will colleges be turned off if I take APUSH since I had already took a US History class, that is Honors US History?

It seems like it would cover similar material…Do they offer AP US Govt and Politics or AP Comparative Govt and Politics? Those would be better choices. Have you taken AP Euro or AP World? You might want to take one of those too. I wouldn’t repeat US History.

They wouldn’t be turned off, of course not. They would, however want to know why you took two US History classes in a row. Are you really interested in it and do you enjoy history, or do you just want your GPA to be better? According to your post, it seems to be the former, and that’s great. Feel free to take APUSH.

It’d be seen as a ‘redo’ and an easy way out if a requirement. If you’re really interested, take it in college where it’ll be taught a bit differently, focusing on a specific theme or period. If there’s a community college nearby that’s what you couldn’t. Otherwise, us gov/comp gov or Euro would be a better choice; you could however write a short essay about the class and what class you’d take at each college.

It might make colleges question why you are taking a class which basically covers the same content. Taking the AP exam and aceing that would be better.

Just remember, if you do take APUSH, that’s one less class available for another subject.

@MYOS1634 The Principal talked to me and told me that many students take Honors U.S. History before APUSH, and colleges would think nothing of it. I have a month to either keep APUSH in my schedule or change it to AP Gov.

I can tell you with certainty that no, ‘many’ students don’t take APUSH after honors us history since they’re not sequential classes, they’re the same class with varying levels of rigor. Take AP Gov and if you truly love us history take a college seminar on it.

Very few schools offer a two year US history sequence. It’ll look like you took it twice, and it sounds like you have other alternatives. At our school, honors and AP are equally rigorous but honors allows in depth study, and a major research paper, which takes time away from material needed for the exam…

I think you would be better off taking something else.

It might be a good idea for you to take the SAT 2 in U.s. history.

At my kids high school you can’t take APUSH without taking US History honors first. It’s a prerequisite.

All the principal probably meant was, at that hs. OP needs to figure if it’s a course he ‘needs,’ as much as something else, since he may be headed for stem.

But, I doubt many here would say, hey, you already took honors bio, don’t mess with AP bio.

Yes, you could take AP gov. Beats AP psych. But certainly a different AP history (usually Euro) would broaden your knowledge, maybe be a stronger choice than gov. But APUSH wouldn’t ‘turn off’ colleges.

In the end, what you need is the right balance. If you have that, in terms of stem and the other courses the colleges will want to see, good. That should be the question.

AP GOV. and possibly consider just taking APUSH AP EXAM.
