Hi!
I’m a high school junior from the Midwest and I recently heard about Elon University. I am a vegetarian, liberal, and love traveling abroad. I’m definitely not interested in a school just for students with wealthy backgrounds and I am not into partying. At the moment, I would like to study foreign languages and international relations. My unweighted GPA is about a 3.7 and I scored a 26 on the ACT but I am going to retake it and hopefully get a higher score. Do you think this would be a good fit for me?
It’s funny, my daughter is a vegetarian from the northeast and we visited Elon while we were looking at schools in NC a few months ago. It’s very pretty, and certainly has some worthwhile academic majors, but based on the other criteria you mentioned I would look elsewhere. We even chose not to apply after her visit.
Thank you apollo322! What did you dislike about the school? Also, where is your daughter looking now?
On the other hand … My son is a vegetarian, liberal, and loves to travel. He is not at all a partier (has never had a drink), but is very social and enjoys hanging out with his friends. He is a very happy senior at Elon who has had an amazing experience there.
I would take any answer from a poster - who’s only post about a school is negative - with a grain of salt. What is that person’s motivation? what are they doing ■■■■■■■■ another school’s blog board? If you want to know about Elon and what they have to offer i suggest you do some additional research. Does Elon (and every other Private school) have kids that are “well to do”? of course. Does Elon (and every other school in the USA) have kids and groups that like drink? of course they do. But does Elon offer a very rounded education that promotes international travel and learning? YES they do. For example my S’s suit-mate for 2 years - leaves next August for Germany for his Junior and Senior years to complete his international business degree - http://www.elon.edu/e-web/admissions/majorsheets/dualbusiness.xhtml.
So good luck
Thank you @mortgagebkr ! You made some excellent points. I think I’ll have to go visit the school for myself.
I agree that it’s always best to visit a campus before judging. We visited Elon after hearing so many good things about it. It’s a beautiful campus with lots of activities for everyone. The facilities are state-of-the-art. Ultimately, my kids decided they wanted to look at schools closer to a big city. But if you like small, charming towns, Elon is definitely worth a look!
I think Elon is worth a look for you. They are actually adding in some brand new dining halls with great vegetarian options you would probably enjoy! And the study abroad program there is consistently ranked #1 in the nation by the Princeton Review. Pick a continent, and you can study there, whether for a full semester or just a month during winter term. It’s a great school, and is getting more and more kids from the midwest every year! You may also be interested in their Gap program, I would check that out as well.
