Hey guys,

I have been deciding whether i should major in finance or economics because I would like to pursue to become a investment banker or banker of some sort? Economics really interests me but I don't know how far it will help me in the world of banking. And is finance a interesting/good major as far as versatility in the business world goes?

any help appreciated,
Thanks

If you do economics you won’t have a strong busiiness background. You will need a PhD eventually. If you do finance you will need a MSF or MBA eventually but you will know enough to do IB.

You don’t NEED to get a PhD or MSF, and you would likely get an MBA with either degree if you decide high finance is right for you (otherwise, you likely won’t even need that).

Finance is about as good as it gets in the business world. Accounting technically opens more doors because you can become a CPA, but with finance you can specialize a bit more for ibanking and get a head start on your knowledge of techniques you might use on the job.

Both of these majors are good choices, but you should think about where you want to go to college in addition to which one you like the most, because economics majors generally have a harder time competing for these types of jobs at universities where there is a business program graduating finance majors. However, lots of very good universities don’t have finance programs, and economics majors are often first in line for ibanking at those.

If you want to work in investment banking right out of undergrad, you should try to attend the highest ranked finance program possible, or do economics at any ivy league/top 20 university.

These are the best for finance:

Banking = finance
Economics = … law?

well ultimately it is still up to you but I don’t know if you’d prefer to draw 1000000 graphs in economics or work on a real life business scenario with your groupmates.
