URM
any good chance at these first tier schools(please dont answer saying school B or C isnt 1st tier, this is what i consider 1st tier

You look good. Go for it!

I think you have a good chance. I wish more URM’s and inner city kids could be in those schools. I am applying to some of the schools you are applying to. Good Luck!

That’s nice but they get tons of “qualified applicants” every year. Do you think there’s something you have that sets you apart? Or will the admissions board go, “Ohlp, he plays Viola. Olhp, he plays Football. Ohlp, he’s smart. Ohlp, he’s a minority. Whatever.”

I’d say focus on either the sports or the instrument or an academic passion (humanities versus science) [and you can change this per the school, of course] and run with it. Make them go “Oh! This is the boy with the viola from New York! Did you know he plays football and basketball and baseball as well?”

If you were worried about FA, though, don’t be. Top tier [and high second] schools don’t really care about FA. If you’re under 75K a year [or more, with siblings], then Exeter will give you a full ride if you get in. None of these schools will go, “He’s absolutely perfect! The Headmaster wants him! I want to adopt him! But we have no money sadface”

Okay thanks. Anyone else

I thought you played the saxaphone…or do you play both?

both nnnnnnmmmmmmhhhhhhhh

Sorry to say what you said not to say, but, I have to point out the fact that Hill, Kent, and St. Marks are not in the same tier as the other schools you’ve listed, but again I respect your own opinion.

That being said, yes it is definitely possible for you to be accepted to any of those schools. What defines a good chance I’m not so sure. From year to year and from school to school the applicant pool is very different and sometimes kids get screwed over, but not to be discouraging, at this point just try to improve anything that you can and nail the interview.

Best of luck.

St. Paul’s - Yes, apply.

yummy is right. Read the FA thread, “My Story”. It paints a clear picture of how tough it is out there. You will be against near perfect students, meaning grades/scores/EC
s and they will be asking for FA as well. You
re better to aim for 2nd tier schools and be the top of the pack. I
m also a minority student and my game plan is to aim for the middle even though I
m not in need of FA.
If I were you I would pick 2 top teirs w/ high endowments. Pick 3 or 4 middle tiers in your range and have 2 or 3 lowers. ( important that all schools are schools you can live with)
Also something to remember, almost all of the schools will offer you a great education. Some may be less selective, some less famous but still very good schools.
CCers tend to focus on the GLADCHEMS schools but they are not the only schools to consider.
Outside of GLADCHEMS consider these NE schools:
Kent
Taft
Hill
Mercerburg
Brooks
Kimball union
N Hampton
Suffield
Peddie
Blair
Williston
Westmister
Canterbury
Governors

Anybody have others I`ve missed?

Have to disagree with Maddog. I think you have the stats for Tier 1, especially since you’re a URM. Keep Milton on the list.
If for some reason you’re not accepted to any Tier 1’s, just continue at your present school.

These are the tier 1 schools: Exeter,Andover,St.Pauls,Hotchkiss,Deerfield,Lawrenceville,Taft,Choate,Milton and Groton
If you had to say based on my stats, what schools will i have the best chance for admission. And dont give me an answer saying theres no way of knowing that, because I know i probably wont get into Exeter,St.Pauls,Andover or Deerfield but what about the rest? If i had to had to say, I think my best chances will be at (in order)
1.Taft
2.Milton
3.Hotchkiss
4.Lawrenceville
5.Choate
6.Groton

Oh and i also may get a job in Mc.Donalds so that may boost my chances :D

And does Choate football and basketball teams suck? It would boost my chances there if they do because my current coach says I can get recruited to play football and basketball. I’m very good at both sports

Im also going to apply to Peddie, Thacher,Cate, and NMh

@greennblue. Why should he aim for only tier 1 schools? This yr. two of my friends applied to top tier schools. Both scored 90
s on ssat, both play 3 sports well, one had all A
s the past two yrs. The other had some A
s, B
s and a C.
The student with the A
s, B
s and a C got in or WL as a full pay. The student with all A
s needed FA and was denied to most.
The student w/ all A
s went to a 2nd tier school and loves it. He`s top of the class and the school is happy to have him.

It depends on how good the OP’s present school is, and how much (s)he has to pay to go to the tier 2 school. With handsome FA a tier 2 is fine. Paying full rate or close to it, my opinion is that a student with the OPs stats should get top academics with similarly qualified classmates.

I suggested Milton because it’s a less common choice to apply to, but just as good as the big names.

the public school im going to isnt as good as the tier1 or tier 2 or even tier 3 schools. So thats not a good option

can someone answer the last few questions i’ve asked?

Taft, Milton, NMH
