Would I count as a transfer applicant?

Hi guys, I just finished my sophomore year of high school.

For the next two years, instead of attending high school, I'll be attending (and living at) a university a few hundred miles away. It's not some super-prestigious university, but a university is still better than high school.

The program there lasts two years (equivalent in time to finishing my senior year), and then I'm free to go where I want. If I applied to MIT at that point, would I count as a transfer or a regular freshman (I'm aware that credits don't transfer)?

Does attending this university instead of high school hurt my chances of admission into MIT?

It depends–if you’re a dual enrollment student or an early enrollment student at the university, which means that you are attending the university through a program by that name and will be receiving your high school diploma after your time there, then you can apply to MIT as a freshman. If you have matriculated to the university and are not officially an early enrollment student, then you would have to apply as a transfer applicant. I would email MIT admissions about your specific case, if it doesn’t fall into one of these categories.
