Would I fit in at Syracuse?

I'm planning to major in journalism, and I know that Syracuse's program is very well-regarded, so I'm considering applying. However, I'm not sure if the school overall is right for me. I've heard that it's a party school, and that Greek life and athletics are both a major part of campus life. I definitely don't want to join a sorority, and I have no interest in sports. I'm mostly interested in indie music and the arts, and am friends with the "weird" kids. I think I'm probably more well-suited to a LAC personality-wise, but I really want a good journalism program. Is there life at Syracuse beyond sports and fraternities/sororities, or would I feel underrepresented and lonely?

Plenty of people at Syracuse who are into what you are; it’s a big school…not everyone is Greek, nor does everyone party hard…

While you are deciding, check out some of the clubs/music groups that are on campus; if you are going to an accepted student day, seek them out to get a feel for them…

I don’t know if CC is necessarily the right place to get your feel; visit, explore and ask questions within the groups you seek out…

Hey Red, not sure what you mean that SU is not a big sports school like Ohio State and that it is very academic. For what it’s worth, D got accepted into both Newhouse and Ohio State–Ohio State received a bit higher U.S. News & World Reports ranking and the admission stats are higher than SU. So, although OSU is a big sports school, it’s also very academic. FWIW, I think both are big sports and academic schools.

Overall ratings do not really accurately reflect Syracuse. It is made up of 8 different schools which vary widely in academic excellence. Getting back to the original poster’s question, SU has great spirit in it’s athletics. The entire town is obsessed with the school’s sports. But it is such a large school, that any student can find a group that matches your interests.
