to ask certain colleges if they've heard of my school. and if they had how much do they know and can i help them learn more about my school in any way? o, and by college i mean colleges like:
harvard
johns hopkins
yale
princeton
u of chicago
cornell
columbia (although we've had one person accepted to barnard this year)
brandeis (we've had one person accepted in our history)

i feel like my school is so small and off the map that regional admissions officers have probably never heard of it.

it probably wouldn't hurt to ask. don't ask in a way that makes it sound like you expect them to know though...

think about it...theres hundreds of thousands of high schools..how on earth are they going to know all? or even 10%? thats why your GC sends in a high school supplement...they just want to know your rank, how grades/GPA is determined, how your peers compare to you, the courseload offered, and how difficult your highschool curriculum is

GCs send profiles about their high schools when the GCs send the other info required for applications.

When admissions officers need additional info, they do things like call the GCs, talk to other admissions officers (including admissions officers at colleges near the high school in question), use Google, and check out the high school's web site.

You don't need to bother offering to provide info.

You should ask your GC for a copy of your high school's profile. A surprising number of schools have outdated profiles or there is inaccurate info in such profile.

yea, i go to a tiny school. My GC sent a profile that talked about our school and town.

my school doesnt keep a friggin profile. the gc is really bad and im afraid about what she would tell a college on the phone (she's really into bending the truth as much as possible to make an applicant look good - and we're talking about a gc who has only sent students to yeshiva u, wayne state, and u of m(u of m is a good school but i dont think they're as interested in the school as they are in things like gpa, class rank, etc). ive heard that she loses kids things, doesnt get things in on time, and forgets what she did. yea, im not in the best situation ever...

a good example of misinformation is possibly the part where it asks about the difficulty of the student's curriculum. i feel like they put "most rigorous" for a lot of students b/c they dont shutup about how we have a "dual curriculum" (judaic + secular) and so that more challenging than any private school or public school education. what a load of bs. don people at those schools hav 8 period days too? reegardless, im really curious to know what she puts there. oh and she also told us how we're better off than kids in other schools because our "electives" are listed as core subjectws and the schools we are applying to arent told that we're required to take those courses (there are no real electives in my school). she's like "you'll be a better applicant with calculus and english as your electives than some person who has bowling and basket weaving listed. (who the hell takes basketweaving and bowling)? I feel like it'd be a goood idea to tell colleges about my school. ill check again to see if we have a profile but i dont think we do. also our website sux and doesnt tell anything about our school.
if anyone would like to see my school's website, id be glad to give him/her the link. pm me.
sorry 'bout the rant.

Even if your GC is as dumb as you say, I imagine that the college admissions officers are going to trust the word of a GC more than the word of a student.

most schools have the profiles available online for anyone to look at, so you can check out yourself what will be sent to the colleges

are you at a private school, and is it accredited? if so, it is suprising they ahve no profile for applicants to look at

I will look at your schools website...pm me

if your school is private, do they have brochures for applicants? if so, that may have some information to help you

yea my school has no brochures. the profiles i've seen online are from 5 years ago. oh also we're a dying school. we had no applicants last year and one this year. we're forty kids. our school is a composite k-12 and all those kids together make 300. but just the high school is 40. o and btw, u don't have to apply. u just say u want to come and ur in (b/c we're so desperate).

egad, okay...well, there must be SOMETHING with the people that accredited the school, unless you are even accredited, then well....if you PM the name, I can do some research for you....

google your school.

i googled it and all i got were profiles of my schooll...from when I was in 8th grade!!!!! o the humanity! (lol)

so have you called colleges that you're applying to? How about your classmates? what are they doing to do?

my classmates are all pretty much gonna apply to either yeshiva university, michigan state, or u of m. we have a bit of a rapport with those schools but yu doesnt really care about ur stats just as long as ur jewish and ur alive and u r an ok/marginal student. i dont think michigan state or u of m really care about such things b/c they are so huge and get such a large number of applicants. like most state schools, i believe they focus mostly on stats (not ec's or things like that). one girl this year got into barnard and i dont know how that happened but it's a miracle (o, she is a legacy and her parents are welll-to-do). she's smart but i dont know how she got in with our gc's help!

o and since we're on the subject of my school ive got another question;
what if we had an ap ffor one year and then it didnt exist after that? i mean, the gc will give a transcript and it will show apush annd then she'll give a course list (i think, dont they ask for that?) what will it look like. il lhave taken a course that's not on there?!

o also, for those of you who are advocating that i call the colleges, what should i do? i cant just be like "yea id like to tell you about ____" but i dont want to give my name cuz then they might keep it on record and see when i apply. i dunno what to do. and besides, who says they'll trust my word?

Try it with a school you don't care that much about, that you're not interested in that much, and see how receptive they are.

Also -- though this takes money -- consider getting help from a college admissions counselor (or even College Confidential! :) Your SAT/ACT scores will make you look good (I mean, assuming you get good scores.) What you can also do is have lots of ECs and get recommendations from your EC advisors, who perhaps aren't related to your HS. Get those EC advisors to tell the colleges how you are unique, special, wonderful.

And, of course, excel in the classes you do take.

Apparently you go to a Jewish dayschool -- I am somewhat familiar with one near where we live. Consider writing your essay about that experience -- e.g., how your religion is important to you but you want to be in a secular college (if that's the case; I don't want to put words in your mouth -- ), how you're looking forward to blah blah blah about college that your HS doesn't have . . . I don't know; just highlight it in some way. I think that will "diffuse" the concerns you have.
