Would it make sense to take Community College Classes to boost GPA

Weighted UC GPA: 3.65 (in-state) (currently Junior)
SAT: 1500
3 APs in Junior year (AP psych 5, APUSH, AP Lang)

EC: Worked in lab at UCLA in Medical research for asthma during Summer
Led collection of $1000+ for medical research.

How best to bring up my GPA to more than 3.8 for UCSD? Would taking Summer Community Classes help?

Just to add: Potential Major: Family and Preventive Medicine

The UC’s cap extra honors points (weighting) to 8 semesters of UC approved Honors, AP/IB or DE courses. UCSD uses the capped weighted GPA for admissions purposes although they will also review your unweighted and fully weighted UC GPA.
You have 6 semesters of weighted classes from Junior year. Did you take any UC approved weighted classes 10th grade?

Taking CC classes will add to your HS course rigor but if you have maxed out your weighted semesters, then it will not add to your UC capped weighted GPA. You also need to make sure that you are able to get A’s in the CC classes since these will follow you throughout your college and possible grad school career.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Yes, I had 3 AP/Hons courses in 10th grade also. So extra Honors points cap is already crossed.

But even if my Community College courses are not counted as weighted(i.e. 5 for an A), they would still be counted as 4 for A and will boost my GPA to above 3.7.
I don’t see any harm in taking this route to try to boost GPA unless I am missing something.
My EC are really great and SAT are good too. All I need is perhaps 3.7-3.8 GPA to get a shot at UCSD.

Of course, getting an A in CC courses maynot be that easy, but no downside in trying?

The only downside is if you don’t get As. Or if the classes interferes greatly with your regular schoolwork. Other than that, not really any downside.

If my school also has semester courses like Religion and Social Justice, would they be included in my UC GPA?

These are on my transcripts and its lot easier to get an A in these than AP level courses, so just wondering.

All college classes are given the GPA bump for the UC weighted uncapped GPA, as well as all AP/IB/Honors classes. The weighted uncapped GPA probably is not the main one that UCSD would consider (weighted capped would still be most important), but it is looked at.

Only high school classes that the UCs recognize as a-g will be used to calculate your UC GPA. You can google UC Gateway and find your HS and see which classes are a-g.

^ that’s for the UC weighted capped GPA.
College classes that are a-g count towards the uncapped.

You can look up the weighted classes at your HS using this link and also any college courses which are a-g courses:

Thanks Gumbymom for the link, that was very helpful.

Your SAT is strong, but GPA is lacking. If you think you have the time and dedication to try and raise your GPA, I’d say go for it. Just be careful not to push your limits
