I was talking with a friend the other day, and she was very excited to have found a set of hand and dish soap dispensers for her newly remodeled kitchen. If you come to my house you will find the plastic Dial soap dispenser by my kitchen sink (the Dawn stays underneath).
I’m just curious how much people notice/care about this.
No, my mil is not here yet, so this wasn’t a comment by her (see my other thread - lol)
Costco has great multi-packs of kitchen towels. The blue ones I bought a while ago happen to match my plastic Dawn dish soap sprayer. I refill said sprayer with a mix of Dawn and water instead of buying a new bottle of premixed diluted soap.
I do not want or have a dispenser BUT I do take a little care to choose fresh, clean looking hand soap brands/bottles. I sort of prefer a clear colored soap in a clear-ish bottle as opposed to a colored soap. I like to buy the Trader Joe lemon or lavender hand soap for the kitchen. For the bathrooms I like to pick a fresh, clean looking bottle from TJ Maxx/HomeGoods. But no dispenser.
Dish soap lives under the sink with not a huge preference as I don’t use it tons except for washing individual pots/pans that aren’t going in the dishwasher. Method brand is nice.
No way. I have both the hand soap and the dish soap on top of the counter/sink. I buy whatever brand looks good to me at the moment.
I also still have the discount store $0.50 plastic soap dish in my shower that I bought for college. It’s over 30 years old now and looks great (for a $0.50 plastic soap dish). My goal is to keep it forever.
Definitely wouldn’t judge you. I currently have Method dish soap, some brand of hand soap, and a “fancy” dispenser of Dove liquid body wash by my kitchen sink. Only reason I have the fancy dispenser is I wanted a pump and it’s what I had. Started using that during COVID because I wash my hands so often. Only reason I have the hand soap is my son was here recently, and he thinks hand soap should be by the kitchen sink, and I haven’t moved it. Most sinks in our house have Method hand soap in the pump bottle it comes in sitting next to them.
You “beat” me. Until I redid my master bath within the last couple of years, I had the plastic Rubbermaid bar soap holder and toothbrush holder next to my master bathroom sink that some relative purchased for me back in 1994. They were perfectly functional, and I cleaned them regularly.
This is the perfect thread to ask a question that has puzzled. Why do I need a hand soap dispenser at the kitchen sink? Why not just use the dish soap? I keep my dish soap in an olive oil style dispenser, so it’s pretty to me, but I just don’t get why I need the clutter of another dispenser? I mean, I am putting my hands in the dish soap all the time anyway.
That’s why I use Dawn. If it is good for the little duckies in their commercials, it is good for me. But I don’t spend hours handwashing dishes. Other folks can have their own reasons for having separate hand soap by the sink.
And I will never judge anyone by the type of soap dispenser they have or don’t have in the kitchen… in my circles, guests are not expected to bring food or to be helping in the kitchen at all! That’s the hosts’ duty.
I use a refill place so our soap dispensers and other bottles are about 3 years old and look it. I could buy nice dispensers to refill but can’t be bothered.
I cannot begin to imagine judging anyone based on such choices!!!
That said, I do have a nice liquid hand soap dispenser by all sinks. I just like it in terms of decor. However, for dish soap, I have the store bought Dawn also by the kitchen sink.
Ok, we do too, but our dispensers go back to when we lived in FL and that’s over 26 years ago. In our house, if something isn’t broken, we don’t replace it. We merely refill it with the largest “refill” bottle we can buy when that needs replacing.
There’s enough plastic garbage around that we don’t feel the need to contribute more.
As for judging, I can’t tell you now what anyone else has in their house. I know I use soap if I’ve used the bathroom or am getting ready to eat or similar. I just pay no attention to the soap.
I’m probably in the minority. I usually am when it comes to anything “fashion” related. On a score of 1-100 with fashion vs functional I’m solidly at the functional extreme.
As long as you have soap (or dish soap), I don’t really care.
I use soap instead of dish soap because the hand soap is less harsh. This year I have washed my hands so much, I like a soap that is moisturizing. My hands and nails are a mess!
I buy soap at bath and body works, I can get it pretty cheap on sale with a coupon. But I’m happy just to have soap to use. And yes, I’ve been in homes where there hasn’t been useable soap in a guest bathroom. Ugh!
In my kitchen, I have a pottery frog bar soap dish that was given to me by my masters thesis advisor in 1976. It holds a bar of dove soap. Is that fancy? I hope it never breaks because I adored the person who gave it to me. I also have a bottle of bath and body works hand soap for those who hate bars, and a bottle of what ever dish soap is on sale.
Our bathrooms I refill. Our dispensers aren’t quite that old, but I got them in the days I doubled/tripled coupons. I got two soft soap brand dispensers for free that had little plastic monkeys inside wrapped around the tube. Older S was a baby/toddler, so that’s about 20-23 years ago.
Lol. My mother in law has one of those built in dispensers in her house, too! It requires a hole in the countertop! It always seems like it would be a PITA to fill. When she got new countertops she insisted on keeping it.
Those are pretty.
The refilling of a decorative container (even if not built in) also seems annoying to me. But, @Creekland has a valid point about plastic waste. Plus, I do like the foaming hand soap. One can probably buy a certain squirty thing that causes the soap to foam?? Idk? The regular kind seems more prone to leaving drips on the counter to me. That would be one reason I don’t just use Dawn. But, I’ve certainly been in homes where that has served double duty as both dish and hand soap. Doesn’t bother me in the least.
I tend to either choose a clear hand soap or a light blue or green. I don’t want a glaring orange because that is not a color in my home.
I don’t judge you, but I sometimes notice when people have very nice soap or towels. If it smells nice (NOT floral, but lemon or fruity), I’ll look to see what it is.
Do I bother? No. Right now I have some foaming hand soap and kinda like that. Lemony. I think it was $3.
I won’t judge you. I have a built in dish soap dispenser in the kitchen. I never had handsoap at all until Covid. Now I do have a pump soap. (Though actually I prefer bar soap which seems much less wasteful to me.) My pump soap is just in the original container, smells of Herbes de Provence. It’s from Stonewall Kitchen - I think the bottle is pretty attractive.
