So I have to pick classes for next year, and these are my choices for math. I'm in pre-calc right now and it's not that bad, but I've heard from seniors at our school that AP Calc is hard. Which one should I pick?

I also have to pick an English class and I have the option of taking AP English, however I have never liked English class. I will be in several advanced science classes next year, and I don't know if I could handle all the reading on top of that. Should I just suck it up and take it anyway?

If you’re doing well in pre-calc I’d highly advise taking calc. I’m not a math person at all, so I didn’t take calc… but all my friends say that it’s easier than pre-calc, apparently.

Don’t take AP English if you hate reading, especially bizarre/old novels and stories. I know it sounds dumb, but you’ll be miserable. The first semester of AP English we read a TON of Greek/Roman mythology, a couple of long and boring Roman epic plays, Hamlet, The Inferno, The Canterbury Tales, and an outside reading book of our choice that had to be a classic. I know that all English classes are different, but I generally like English and all that reading became a huge drag after a while.

From the fact that you’re taking advanced science classes, I am going to assume you either want to study science or engineering in college.

In that case, take Calc. If you really think you’re going to have a really hard time with it just take AB.

If it’s very hard at your school (like it was at mine) it’s likely harder than the actual college classes (which you may have heard or not) but colleges will still expect you to take Calc in high school, especially if you are planning on going into science or engineering.

As for English, if you don’t want to take AP (and aren’t aiming for HYPSM), don’t. I didn’t even take an English class my senior year.

hmm…I’m in both this year. AP Stats is ALOT harder than I ever thought it would be. It’s a weird way of thinking, but AP Calc is difficult as well

If i had to pick, I’d go with Calc…but if you’re not good at math, do Stats

AP English doesn’t involve a lot of reading. It’s more about identifying what literary techniques authors use. However, if you don’t like English, don’t take it or you’ll be miserable.

AP Stats is quite enjoyable and interesting. If you plan on pursuing a career in science Calc might be a good idea. However, only take it if you’re good at math. I know countless people who are very good students but are earning C’s in Calc.

Okay thank you guys. I’m probably taking Calc then. So you don’t think colleges will think I’m lazy if I opt out of AP English? From what you guys are saying I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like it. I am going to be a science major and am looking at colleges such as Northwestern, Rochester, Michigan, etc.

^ I’d say it depends on the amount of APs you already will be taking next year. Say you’re taking 4-5 already, then adding AP English to that burden really wouldn’t be necessary (especially if you have no interest in that subject)

Yea I’m also going to be in AP Psych, AP Calc, Advanced Chem (don’t have an AP), Physics (don’t have an AP), and Spanish 3, so maybe they will see I’m not really that interested in English.
