I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to take Pre-AP Biology next year. This is what most freshman take, and I'll be a sophomore. In addition, my sister will be a freshman next year so she or people she knows might be in the same class as me. This is embarrassing for me, especially since I'm used to being in classes with people who are in higher grades than me, and I've never been in a class with people of a lower grade. I have to take this class because I want to do IB HL Biology which is equivalent to AP Biology I believe. I took Chemistry this year. So my question is, would you take a class with mostly younger people than you? How do I get over this?

Yeah. Nobody really cares.

Nobody cares, my D has seniors and freshmen in the same class all the time. Get over it. :)

Why not? It doesn’t mean that they are any better or smarter than you. You just happen to be in the same class. No biggie.

No one give a crap. There are people in my grade who are technically a year behind in Math, so they’re stuck with Freshman.

@cmgrayson Yeah, my Chemistry class has 9-12th graders. It’s just that I’ve always been the youngest and I think the 9th graders will judge me and think I’m behind in academics and not very smart if I’m older than them and in the same class as them.

@Animefan1998 Exactly my point. I don’t want them to think I’m a year behind in science and that’s why I’m in the same class as them.

Yes they might but think about how that affects you in reality? Right, it doesn’t, I know that’s kind of an adult way to explain it but it’s true. My D says she has friends in all grades because kids are taking classes at all levels - she rarely mentions it in a judgmental way except for the senior who was taking PE (and I think this dude actually flunked PE and had to retake it). Do high school the way you choose to do high school.

What class did you even take this year?

You have to take Biology in high school, especially before IB or AP sciences… So you really don’t have a choice here. Who cares what they think, they’re freshmen and probably to concerned with themselves to care about you.

Everything gets mixed up in high school.

If you don’t want to, don’t do it. Then you can’t take IB, right? Your call.

You’re freaking out over nothing. You’re the one who decided to take Chemistry instead of Biology this year. But honestly, no one will care.

" I think the 9th graders will judge me and think I’m behind in academics and not very smart if I’m older than them and in the same class as them." " I don’t want them to think I’m a year behind in science and that’s why I’m in the same class as them. " Yes, you need to get over this. First of all, you do this by recognizing that even though you have these very judgemental ways of looking at other people’s course selections and thereby drawing all kinds of unfounded and irrelevant conclusions about them, that most likely the other people in the class do not pin all their self-esteem on being ahead of others in a particular class and most likely won’t think anything of it if you’re in that class. And if anyone seems to have an issue with it, just calmly inform them that you took chemistry last year, then decided you wanted to take bio. It’s really none of their business and a stupid thing for anyone to worry about. Plenty of classes in high school are mixed grade. My daughter has juniors in her honors bio class. They’re not there because they’re stupid. They’re there because they chose an alternative educational path, rather like you did. And she knows that.

Most classes in High School have multiple grade levels in them. You’ll be fine.

@Animefan1998 My 8th grade teacher told me to take Chemistry since I am in Algebra 2. There were other people who were also in Algebra 2 and took Pre-AP Biology, but I decided to take Chemistry. That’s what my sister took in 9th and that’s what the teacher said to do. I regret doing Chemistry this year. It’s also my second lowest grade right now.
@mathyone I guess I am a bit judgmental but I assumed everyone else was too. I can tell when they look at me in a mean way because I have bad clothing and stuff. I try not to be judgmental though.

I did AP Human Geography as a sophomore, despite it being taken by mostly freshmen, and I benefited greatly, and even have a posse of freshmen who think of me as god…and then I come on CC :[

You have to take this class if you want to take IB Biology, right? So just take the class. If you don’t care enough to take IB Biology, then don’t take the class.

This can be a great experience in growing up and not caring what other people may or may not think of you. Every person has to do this at some point, and it’s a great time to start. You may think that other people are judging how you look or what classes you are taking, and sure, maybe some people are but they aren’t NEARLY as much as you think they are.

No stranger cares about what you do or even thinks about you as much as you think they do. Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks, and just do what you want to do.

People who look at you in a mean way because you have bad clothing are probably not worthy of being your friends, so pay them no mind. Are they friends with you or with your clothing? Would you want friends who only liked you because you wore expensive name-brand clothes?

If you’re concerned about the impression you make on your classmates, just be a good student. Kids always seem to know who the good students are.

@mathyone and @baktrax Thanks for helping me feel better about taking Pre-AP Biology. I guess it’ll help me learn a lesson too.
