Does everyone have to take it, or can you be exempted (other than being an architecture, music, etc.. major)?

everyone has to, no matter what major--whether architecture, business, journalism or music.
go to usc.edu/orientation if you need more information.

Everyone takes it with their Category VI general ed class.

everyone takes it

unless you are a transfer or freshman spring admit who takes a writ130 equivalent (check with your school's articulation)

does getting a 5 on ap lit and/or a 5 on ap lang allow you to test out of the requirement for 130?

do ir-global businesses only have to do one or another? i am a bit confused, as i am a transfer student and unsure if i have to take BOTH 130 and 140 or just one or the other.

i am petitioning to have 130 completed through my freshman year writing course at my old school, and I was under the impression that I had to take one of the courses.

this is what my writing requirement section appears like on my STARS report:

COMPOSITION/WRITING REQUIREMENT -- COURSE WORK MUST BE
TAKEN FOR A LETTER GRADE:
--> NEEDS: 2 SUB-GROUPS

1) FIRST YEAR WRITING REQUIREMENT:
NEEDS: 1 COURSE
SELECT FROM: WRIT130 WRIT140

2) UPPER DIVISION WRITING REQUIREMENT:
NEEDS: 1 COURSE
SELECT FROM: WRIT340

it just says one course...so...i'm assuming i just need one, right?

most people don't have to take 130 UNLESS their critical reading and writing score combined were below the standards (in this case: combined score below 1100 out of 1600 on the SAT) and a score below 24 on the ACT.
you'll probably only have to take 140. when you go to your respective orientation, they'll most likely tell you that.

Yes, you DO have to take WRIT-140 (with VERY few exceptions, which I assume were already posted). Getting a 5 on AP Literature/Language will not exempt you from WRIT-140, and neither will getting a 7 on the IB English exam.

no, unfortunately. And it turns out that writ-140 is actually very different from both ap's.

All majors have to take one or the other. In fact, writ-130 and writ-140 are exactly the same course. The only reason the two are distinct is registration related.

You have to take both 140(or 130) and 340. If you get 130 transferred in, then you just have to take 340.

You're thinking of writ-120, which is a different course from 130 and 140 :)
