I'm not sure how to word this but I've noticed that when some freshmen talk about the writing 20 class they would add a specific topic matter that the class will cover like writing 20: genetics and society. Can you actually pick the subject matter of your writing 20 course?

Yep, you can choose from a wide variety of Writing 20 topics.

However, if you have a late registration window (I had the last one my 1st semester freshman year), I would suggest taking your required seminar class during the 1st semester and then choosing the Writing 20 your second semester. This way, you'll have a lot more options to choose from.

Because seminars cover a variety of topics, some being more desirable than others as well, I'd actually suggest taking both the seminar and writing classes second semester while taking larger uniform (science/math) classes first semester.
