Is there any reason to take one over the other first semester? The only Writing 20 that I found really interesting is filled up, so I think I'm just going to go for a seminar instead...

If you feel your writing needs to improve, then you should go with writing 20.

hmm, why is that?

I thought that the purpose of writing 20 was to teach students how to write at a college-level. So, if you feel that you don't write at that level, then you should give writing 20 a chance.

However, if you feel comfortable tackling the 5 to 20 page papers that your other courses may require, then take a seminar this semester and hope you get into an interesting writing 20 course the next semester.

Does that mean that a good portion of the incoming class that will have to take a seminar in the fall (there's only room for half of the class in Writing 20, right?) will be unprepared for some of their other classes as a result?
I hope that doesn't sound abrasive or anything, I'm just curious. Anyways, I doubt my other classes- math 32L, Latin will require papers. Psychology of Gender, yes, but I think I'll be okay.

That's the way I see it.

I got stuck with third window, which means writing 20 is effectively out of my reach. This blows because I feel I need to improve my writing. Like for example, I've never written a *ing 5 page essay, let alone a damn 15 page paper some of the *ing classes require.

**** I'm ****ed. I'm going to self-study over the summer. sigh...

Aw, don't worry. I got 2nd window, so I could take a writing 20 but there are some really interesting seminars out there! And I'm sure lots of other people in the seminars will be in the same boat as you are. If Writing 20 was THAT important, I think Duke would have made every freshman take it first semester.

Is it possible for me to take both seminar and writing in the next semester? Both my interested Writing and Seminar courses have been filled up. And do you know how can they place us in the registration window. If I am in the 3rd window now, does that mean I will be in the first window or second in the next registraion period?

you'll be 2nd in the spring, 1st next fall, and so on...and no, I don't think you can take both next semester, but I'm not 100% sure.

Someone on facebook was able to get both a seminar and writing 20 this semester, so you might be able to do both the next.

I recommend you try to get one of them done though.
