Writing about shooting.. Can I do it?

Hello all,

For my optional supplement essay, I decided to write about my main hobby - shooting rifles at the shooting range. However, i talked to my counselor about it and she showed it to an admissions counselor, and the response wasn't great. Apparently, writing about shooting brings up memories of things like Virginia Tech and is an immediate red flag for admissions.

However, everyone agreed that the essay was a great piece, and it really showcases me. Shooting is a great hobby of mine, and I'm not sure what else I could write about. In addition, I went on the university's website and they have an actual rifle club.

I'm a little confused over this matter, and was hoping you guys could explain. Should I submit this essay, or is it too risky?

Thanks in advance!

It is not WHAT you write about rather than HOW you do it! As long as it is interesting, unique and describes you I’d recommend you submit it :)

i think they don’t want psycopaths who shoot (I know you are not, but one might think that way) around

BUT, if they have a rifle club, I would definietly do it, you can even talk about how you are not a psycopath in an essay.

I see. Thanks for the advice everyone! :)

I truly enjoy target shooting, but I did not mention it on my MIT application. Reason being just how narrow minded some people are. I feel a little disappointed that I left it out :(
