Hi all,
I was wondering what your view is on me writing about LGBT rights and how I believe in equalization for my Georgetown essay?
I'm unsure of the committee's views of such things, and I am also unsure if Georgetown is pretty liberal or conservative.
Though I am not a lesbian, this topic is pretty near and dear to my heart, and the essay could be very very good. But if this would offend the adcom or give them reason to deny me, I would not want to go down that path.

Hi Princessk21,
Even though I personally think that would make a great essay, you never know the views of the admissions committee, and my teacher advised me not to write an essay about sexuality, so I think your topic would be along the same lines. If you can think of another topic I would tend to go safe rather than sorry. Good luck!!

As a current student at GU, I know that there is a sizable openly LGBTQ population on campus. Moreover, I do know at least one individual here who has made sexual orientation the subject of his admissions essay. I wouldn’t discourage you from writing your essay about sexuality, but I do think you would have to handle the subject well.

You will be fine; at a mandatory freshman event in orientation they read excerpts from select student’s essays, one of which was about a person struggling with coming out of the closet. Gtown also has a LGBTQ center, the fist Catholic university to create one, and is very liberal quite honestly.

Although Georgetown is a liberal school, I would avoid writing something that is that controversial and has the possibility to offend and/or rile an admissions officer.

Honestly I think you should go for it college admission representatives love people who take risk. One of my friends applied to a prestigious school and one of his optional essays was to write about something risky he did. so he had a little fun. he wrote on one page “this” , on the second page “is” and on the third page “risky” in big letters and he was admitted and the admission officer who read he application eventually meet him and she was telling him how she loved his application because it was so different from everyone else’s and etc. So you never know. Also I think the LGBT essay is a good idea because Georgetown is one of those school who are now trying to diversify their campus. and are very free spirited student body. Writing about something you are not only passionate about but also something you can bring to the campus to diversify it is a good idea!! and no Georgetown is not as conservative and catholic as you think!
