Writing an essay about your sport

My oldest D wrote about the sport that was an very important part of her pre-teen/teenage years. Like others, hers wasn’t really about sports. She wrote about dealing with disappointment and why she continued to compete and train (she was on a national team) even though her group lost its one chance to qualify the US for a spot at the Olympics.

D wrote essay about her sport with main focus being that she started her sport team at her HS and was one person team her HS Freshman year. She got into few very selective programs with as few as 10 spots available for freshman. However, she did not apply to any elite colleges, so I do not know anything about their requirements.

^^soozievt said “What I care about is that when the essay is read, that the reader could state several attributes they learned about the student. When the reader reads the second or third required essay, what different points about the student did the reader glean?”

This is exactly what the essays should convey. At first I wasn’t too sure about the various topics my now soph girl chose but her voice came through very clearly. The schools knew they were getting the real deal and not a heavily edited polished essay written with lots of help. Since we are in the north east with a highly competitive public h.s. and writing is not where her strength lies, she needed to distinguish herself from the other applicants from this area. She wrote very personally about homey things. She’s travelled the world but her essays reflected some simple and quiet aspects of her personality, her jobs and her philosophy. She’s now attending her dream school.
