Writing Counts Starting 2009

Fyi . . . Checked my son's score this morning and was thrilled to see the Reading/Math climb to 1420 (720/700). Ventured over to the UF site to check the freshman profile and noticed a blurb on the admissions page that said starting with the class entering in fall 2009 UF will be counting the writing portion of the SAT. So, if you've been dismissing, as we have, the writing score as unimportant, that is about to change.

Unfortunately he got a 620 on the writing. We were planning telling him he didn't need to take the SAT again if he got 1400+ and now we probably need to ask him to spend a little time this summer working on the writing section and have him take it again early this fall.

Thought folks would like to know. It was news to me this morning.

I can't imagine that they will put very much weight into the section. Also, don't hesitate to take it as many times as you want to because the admissions office really does only pull out the highest scores..and it's computerized

If your sons GPA is high and he has a difficult course load and good extra curriculars I wouldn't worry too much about the writing portion of the SAT for UF next year. His verbal and math are high enough that he should have no problem. Let him enjoy his summer. Tell him to write an awesome essay and he'll show them he can write well. Good Luck!

What's the harm in taking it again?

No harm at all and it may help....if he wants to take it again.

Mom and Dad are legacies. Hopefully that won't hurt. He's top 10% of his class in a good high school with a 4.06 GPA. He will have 11 APs at end of Seniior year and is on the varsity baseball team. We're hopeful he'll get in. If that sounds goofy, our older son had a 3.89, 1390 and did the IB program and didn't get in at Univerisity of Texas. He's there this fall after a year at a feeder school. There are no sure things in admissions unfortunately.

Mostly I was just sharing the news that UF will be considering the writing section with the next round of decisions. For folks like us that hadn't given the writing part any consideration, thought it would be useful to the board to know of the change.

Oh, and he is enjoying his summer. He plays select baseball. Just played his 52nd game in 38 days today. Will wind up playing about 80 games in 8 weeks. The last four summers his baseball got interrupted with the Duke Tip program. It was nice this summer for him to be able to commit to a full summer of baseball without having to explain to the coach that he needed three weeks off in the middle to go to Duke.

I've heard the University of Texas at Austin for Texas students is like the University of Florida for Florida students. A really good university with tons of applicants and hard to get into. I really love Texas A&M and Rice University. Rice has great academics and a great baseball program. Just wondering if 2nd son is applying to either of these schools. In any event...he sounds like he should get in UF no problem. Good Luck!

Does UF superscore?

YESSS!!! I did awesome in the writing, hope this helps me...
