Some people believe that one day we will establish not only bases on the Moon but also a landing on Neptune will occur
.A.we will establish not only bases on the Moon, but also a landing on Neptune will occur
B.not only bases on the Moon will be established, but also a landing on Neptune will be made
C.we will not only establish bases on the Moon but also land on Neptune
D.we will not only establish bases on the Moon, but we will land on Neptune in addition
E.we will not only establish bases on the Moon, but we will land on Neptune
Why is the answer c and not b ?
I assumed that c is wrong since after “not only” there are a verb , noun, and a prepositional phrase, while after " but also" there are only a noun and a prepositional prase. So there is a lack of parallelism. Am I right ??
When there is no in-your-face reason for doing otherwise, choose the active sentence over the passive one. B is passive. C is active.
There is no lack of parallelism in c. The structure is parallel, but several words have been omitted where they are clearly understood. This is OK.
Just to add a funny tip I saw online – to tell the difference between active and passive voice, add “by zombies.” If the sentence makes sense, it’s passive. If it doesn’t, it’s active.
Ex. A moon landing was made by zombies. (Passive)
I made the moon landing by zombies. (Makes no sense; active)
Why do you think there’s no parallelism? Both parts begin with a verb in the same tense and continue with a noun. Looks pretty similar to me.
in the first part there is the verb establish but in the seconnd part there is no verb. where is the verb ?
My point is that after not only there is a verb but after but also there is no verb. This is my problem
We will not only establish but also land
Land is the verb, as in “I successfully landed the plane,” not as in “I was happy to get my feet on dry land” (there it’s a noun).
hahahaha I am sorry I was just confused I thought here land is a noun and it needed a verb so it will then be establish a land on neptune. I just misunderstood the sentence. Thank you guys for enlightening me
