writing questions

1.

(when) recipes for iced tea (appeared in) (a few) late-nineteenth century cookbooks, the drink did not (become popular) until the 1904 worlds fair.

the answer is A ???????

2.

Quincy took Dan to Derek's home (for a visit), (never imagining) that five years (would pass) before (seeing) Derek again.

the answer is D

Number one, A is wrong because the two clauses of the sentence are contrasting, therefore using ‘when’ is not correct and instead you should be using ‘Although.’ Take a look at it this way:
Although recipes for iced tea appeared a while ago, it did not become popular until today.

Remember, whenever you’re unsure of a Spotting Errors WR question, check for misplaced modifiers, pronouns, and conjunctions, before marking off E (No error).

As for number two, these are two distinct clauses and using the verb ‘seeing’ for the second time in the second clause is ambiguous. Who is seeing exactly? D is incorrect, and to correct it you may replace it with ‘before he saw’ or ‘before Dan saw.’

If anything is unclear, I’m glad to elaborate.

thanks alot bro!!!
