I’m a parent of Junior who hates to write. I’m already fearing getting him started on admissions essays. Does anyone know of a resource to help him practice writing before deadlines are looming? If possible it needs to be a really small time commitment to get him started.
Same EXACT problem! Even though my daughter is and average student, I’m afraid my daughter won’t get in anywhere if she can’t learn to open up in her writing.
Check out info.story2.com/five-minutes-a-day they’ve got free five minute writing exercises to help students get prepared for the college admissions process and it’s totally FREE
Common app essays and college supplements are scary. I put them off the entire summer before senior year. One method I used when I applied was using bullet points. See which prompt your son is interested in writing and then make a list of bullet points. They could be things/ideas he wants to include in the essay, incomplete sentences, thoughts, whatever! Just Write. Worry less about the essay layout or structure in the beginning. Just get the ideas/words/sentences down and then connect them all at the end.
Once you have one essay down, the other ones would seem much easier because you basically have a “template.” You can refer back to that essay and draw ideas from it. I wrote more than 15 supplements and essays last year (not an exaggeration), and each one became easier than the previous. Once you have a starting point, you know where to go.
Best of luck!
