Hey... I would apply, but the only thing is, I asked a physics and a french teacher to write my rec's. I know that you need to have a social studies teacher or w/e, which I don't. I honestly didn't decide to apply to UChicago until like 3 weeks ago, not giving me enough time to ask any teacher to write a rec. Also, my social studies teacher last year is not here this year (cancer), and I don't feel comfortable asking my senior year teacher who I have only known for a little while to write one. Is there any point in applying if I am going to be blatantly disregarding their request to select teachers from certain subject areas? Has anyone gotten in not following these rules?

I would try to e-mail the admissions office or call. It might be hard to talk to them because it's Sunday and tomorrow is New Year's Eve, the next day is New Years, and the day after that the applications are due.

But I think that they'd understand. And if not, you should make an honest effort to show that you are so interested in the University of Chicago and think that they will be so interested in you once they receive your app that they should stretch the rules just once. Give it your best shot!

Unfortunatley, from what I've read, they're pretty draconian about exactly s who sends in recommendations. When I visited last April I remember someone asking this very same question and the admissions guy giving the talk said flatly that the recommendations have to come from teachers in the proper fields. Try to contact the admissions office and explain your situation and see what happens. They might let you submit one late, or maybe they'll say it doesn't matter. Nothing bad can come out of contacting them, so you should definitley do that.

You can send in a rec after 1/1 just ask whoever to send it priority or express or say that you will send it for them. Dont you have like english teachers from previous years?

I would also suggest that you extract a rec from an english or social studies teacher and get it to Chicago ASAP. Yours won't be the only recs to be a little late.

If your current teacher does not know you well, be sure to provide a copy of your activities resume - that should help a lot. Good luck!

just say that you accidentally gave the supplemental rec to your social/eng. teacher and vice versa. they will never know you got the wrong teachers. Just make sure you get the other teacher to give you the rec asap.

Don't lie.

Do send an e-mail or something in advance explaining what you explained here.

Do get an English or social studies teacher to write a recommendation.

Do recognize that there is a reason they want a recommendation from one of those teachers: those are the teachers who will be most familiar with your academic WRITING, which is a very important factor at Chicago. Application essays and the SAT I Writing section may be helpful, but the first may be heavily "edited" and the second is very artificial. It's possible (but not very likely) that you have done extended writing for your French teacher, but you ought to make certain someone addresses this topic.

Just notice that you can get a social studies or English teacher to write it - are your junior/senior English teachers still there and approachable?

Also, I definitely agree about sending an email or whatever to explain the situation, but don't let it get you down too much - Libby (adcom) got in and her science teacher's rec never even made it (not to say this is always the case, just pointing out that it won't destroy you).

Good luck!
