W's

Can someone remind me how UCLA handles W's? I will have 9 of them, but 3 of those classes I have retaken, with A's. I will have a 3.9/4.0 by the end of Spring, for Fall 2015 transfer.

The 9 W's are all from the first year I was going to start college but decided to work instead. So I never even went to the college, but I forgot to drop them, so they gave me W's. Can I tell them this in my application? It's not like I was taking the classes and dropped out, I never even started them. It was literally an oversight on my part not to drop w/o W in time.

Actually, let me clarify. 6 of those were given without me attending. 3 of them I did attend, but only for the first week, and then I left to work instead, forgetting to drop.

UCLA, and any other UC School do not care about W’s. I have 11 of them and UCLA, UCSD, and UCSC still accepted me. I am sure that you will be fine.

Sweet. Thanks. :)

I have 3 W’s in transferable classes and UCLA didn’t really seem to give a ■■■■. Even with 9 Ws(several of whom in classes you retook and got A’s in), you should be fine.

As long as you have a GPA of 3.6-7+, you’ll be good to go.

Am. Lit major, (3.4 avg acceptance rate) so I should be good to go. Thanks again guys. :)

You’ll slaughter all the other applicants with your high GPA. :D

Now that’s what I like to hear. ;)

BTW @cayton, do you think it’s worth doing TAP, if I can really pull off this 3.9? I mean, TAP expects a bunch of other requirements. Just not sure I’ll need it? All IGETC and major prereqs will be complete by the end of Spring 2015.

One more Q while I’m at it. 2 classes I have that are B’s are CSU only, not UC transferable. They wont count those, will they? That would pull me down to 3.8, if they do. Hoping they won’t.

It’s definitely worth doing TAP. I can say with confidence that it not offers you the rare opportunity to be accepted into an alternate major if you’re denied from your first major(UCLA generally doesn’t consider applicants for their second majors. They really, really don’t.), but it enhances your application. It’d make you more competitive than another applicant with a similar GPA and other stats. If, however, you’re confident you’ll have a 3.9 GPA or something in that range by the time you apply, then you shouldn’t need it. Think of it as a little insurance policy and not as something you need to get in.

I did TAP anyway, just in case.

And no, they don’t classes that transfer only to CSUs. They must specifically be transferable to the UCs to count.

Excellent, thanks again. :)

Almost everybody with TAP gets in unless you apply to a ridiculously impacted major like Biz Econ. And with TAP even applicants with 3.3-3.5 GPA’s get in so it’s helpful.

I didn’t do TAP because I didn’t finish the required honors classes. Still got in though.

I did the exact same thing! i signed up for classes and then just never went to college, thinking that it would just sort itself out lol. But yeah like the others have said, they don’t matter. I have 8 and got into Cal. I’m guessing UCLA is no different.

As long as they are not in your major classes, it doesn’t really matter. But it would be smart to explain this in your personal statement (if you’re applying next year or so).

Don’t they matter for grad school though?

I have 5 W’s, 2 F’s, and 1 D.

Retook/Retaking W’s: 1 B, 1 A, 1 IP
Retook/Retaking F’s: B, B
Retook/Retaking D’s: B

Still got into UCLA, UCI, UCSB, and UCR

No, I did not bribe any admissions officers, “put out,” or blackmail anyone.

I’m positive that they do. I think they’ll ask you to explain in a short, brief paragraph.
